His dyed-black hair is shaved to a Mohawk wh some baroque scrolls rved to the shorter hairs at the back. “They love me Berl,” says Maro, tappg his cht wh a worn brown leather crop. “But you ought to see me Sdi Arabia. Everyone’s wearg whe rob, and I’m sort of all black.”</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p>It n be hard to rencile this <em>Srp Risg</em> look wh the ede man whose Renaissance and Baroque bronz were exhibed two years ago at the Wallace Collectn London; even Maro’s stat as a leadg archect for the rriage tra, and <em>the</em> archect for fashn brands—Chanel, Dr, Fendi, Louis Vuton—do not save him om the ocsnal high-society cint. As he recently relled, French aviatn magnate Serge Dasslt attempted to eject the leather-clad Maro om a 2009 chary ncert Paris. The pianist that eveng was Hélène Mercier, wife of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnlt, who is one of Maro’s biggt clients. The archect tried to expla that he was a gut of the Arnlts; the head of Dr fally swooped to rcue him.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="13qp3k"></div></div><p>Like his mentor and early patron Andy Warhol, Maro relish playg the provotr, and a certa fearls precy has only helped him sce he started his practice 1978, his late 20s, wh a dazzlg troika of missns. “First I did the private home of Andy Warhol,” he says. “Then I did the Manhattan apartment of Pierre Bergé and Yv Sat Lrent, and then I did a Park Avenue apartment for Gianni and Marella Agnelli. That was que a way to burst upon the scene. I got a very big ph thanks to Andy at the start of my reer.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>Though Maro had apprenticed the New York Cy offic of morn masters I. M. Pei, Gee Nelson, and Skidmore, Owgs & Merrill after gettg his gree archecture om Cornell, the effervcence of the downtown and jet-set scen held a far greater appeal. The Warhol circle, enpassg not only the art world but also Euro aristocracy-at-large, gave him exposure to a smopolan i that would otherwise have been accsible to a self-scribed “kid om Queens.” His entrée me through his then-girliend, Pat Hackett, who was Warhol’s secretary. The artist’s boyiend, terr signer Jed John­son, llaborated wh Maro on some early projects, cludg the Sat Lrent–Bergé apartment at the Pierre hotel. (The r was an homage to Olana, the Hudson River Valley hoe of pater Freric Church, wh elaborate Orientalist gold-and-turquoise stencilg on the walls. In Maro’s words, “That was sort of tellg those Frenchi, ‘You want to be chic? Bergé, for stance, got him terted bronz. Marella Agnelli’s unique flair for mixg pricels antiqu wh sual furnure quickly bbed off on him. And though he was the new kid on the ratg block, he was not shy about bashg signers he disparaged for dog “ready-to-wear” vers his “uture.” He moled himself after the European greats, pecially the highly theatril Italian master Renzo Mongiardo, who worked for the Rothschilds and Valento. Mongiardo was fond of elaborate pated and laid surfac—an enormo spiratn for Maro, who has always paid obssive attentn to texture and fish.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Few archects or signers n look back at such important early-reer jobs. I ask Maro if, hdsight, he would do thgs differently today. “No—they were so f---g geo,” he says. “There’s nothg like the energy and the creative flow when you’re young. It jt unfiltered out of your stomach, your heart, anythg but your md. As you get olr you thk more, which is a negative. My projects have gotten much more plex, so ’s sort of like you have to grow up, which is somethg I thk is dumb.</p><p>“It’s been amazg to me,” he adds, “nsirg that my bt work has never been published, that I got as far as I did. But the right people see the right hom, I suppose.”</p><p>At the level he works today, he says, “I feel like the fay doctor.” Certa clients have been returng to his office (now 140 people strong) for three s. “I’m wh some of the fai workg on their sixth and seventh hom,” he says. When I ask him for a list of some recent private clients, he will only relquish last nam: Armani, Arnlt, Coleman, Hill, Rayner, Rothschild, Saa, Schwarzman.</p><p>There <em>are</em> nam Maro is very fortable throwg around, however, and those are the fashn brands for which he signs retail stor. This sector now reprents 50 percent of his practice (rintial is 25 percent; hotel, spa, and other mercial work make up the rt). The numbers are staggerg: worldwi more than 30 stor for Chanel, 20 for Louis Vuton, 15 for Dr. At least half of the projects are Cha. “I remember the ’80s we got our first mercial job for a ln-dollar renovatn,” Maro tells me. “I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. Now the sum they spend on stor n easily top $100 ln, if we’re buildg a tower.”</p><p>This is a great leap om his early mercial trag wh Gee Nelson. Once on his own, Maro was drafted by Phyllis and Fred Prsman, the owners of Barneys New York, to help sign store displays. His first missn was a rectangular vre for LiLac Cholat. Wh ten years, the Prsmans had signed him to mastermd all their stor, cludg major buildgs Manhattan and Beverly Hills. It was while planng the signer boutiqu for Barneys that Maro first met many of the fashn moguls for whom he would later work: Grg Armani, Karl Lagerfeld, and the Zegna fay, for He says he felt no pa verg over Sat Lrent’s famo stenciled walls wh elaborate silver-gray panelg, textured a way that rembled a bronze Lalanne gkgo-leaf table.
