They were on Broadway. They were makg seri and so on,” he says. “So was only for me really about a year after the end of the show, the murmur wouldn't die down and I started to thk, 'Well if there is a film, I'd better make a few cisns about what's gog to be .’ ”</p><p class="">Set the fictnal Yorkshire untry tate of Downton Abbey, the seri picted the liv of an aristocratic fay and their servants om 1912 to 1926. The show end 2015, and now the new film wh a screenplay by Fellow opens theaters this week.</p><p class="">The movie stars all of the old favor om the televisn seri — Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary, Hugh Bonneville as the Earl of Grantham, Elizabeth McGovern as the earl’s Amerin wife Cora, and Maggie Smh as the Dowager Counts.</p><p class="">In the film, the hoe is antilly preparg for the arrival of Kg Gee V and his wife, Mary. Fellow says he chose a royal vis as the talyst for the film bee he says ’s an event that would affect everyone the hoe different ways.</p><p class="nt-medium">“They would all be on their to,” he says. “They might be hostile. And a sense they have not changed his beliefs. They haven't. But what they have done is change his perceptn on how to nduct himself society. I mean the reason he do have a very signifint role is that when I was cidg that we were gog to do , I was lookg at the last seri and I realized that Tom Branson was the only one who wasn't a sense settled at the end of the show. Everyone else was, even the long unhappy Edh had found her perfect man. And I didn't want to unpick any of that. But gave me Tom Branson as someone who uld have a love story, which I thk the film need.”</p><p class=""><b>On the portrayal of gay life 1920s Bra</b></p><p class="nt-medium">“There's no reason to believe there's any smaller percentage of people were gay 1927 than there are now. The difference beg that 98% of them were forced to live a lie, and I thk 's important to remd particularly young people that we have e a long way this area. I mean at the moment, all you ever hear is how terrible everythg is, but there are certa thgs that have improved and that is one of them. But the gatherg plac were not as they would be, even at the end of the '50s when was still illegal, but was begng to be clear that wouldn't be for very much longer. That wasn't te the '20s. And if you had a gatherg place, wasn't all led wh red plh and everyone havg a lovely drk at the bar. It was a warehoe. It was a storeroom. It was anywhere where you uld set up and move at a moment's notice when the police found out. And I hope that through the film, that was very very difficult to be gay and to live a life. And I don't want to lose touch wh that really.”</p><p class=""><b>On wrg for Maggie Smh and Penelope Wilton</b></p><p class="nt-medium">“Well 's om when you're wrg for that level of flair bee you know that they're gog to h the spot every time and they're gog to h the target. When you know they're gog to Maggie and Penelope or [Imelda Stnton] or whatever, is very satisfactory. And actually one of the greatt pleasur of this latt adventure has been to s an enormo cema and hear people all lghg together bee you know, when you watch on televisn you don't get that. You know, you have your wife who's seen 16 tim before and your son who's readg a book and that's . And sudnly there you are the middle of people fdg funny and I love that.”</p><p class=""><b>On why “Downton Abbey” is so beloved</b></p><p class="nt-medium">“Well of urse, if I knew that I would do nothg but replite s succs for the rt of my life. But I thk there is a fascatn lookg at how our forebears lived. And one of the thgs I'm really pleased about, which I hope ‘Gosford Park’ and ‘Downton’ have ntributed to, is that when I was a child, the story of the great ho was always the story of the fay, and they were the rooms that were on show. You saw the drawg room and the library and the ballroom. But you never saw the kchens. You never saw the servants or you never saw any of that. And that's pletely different now. And I get a lot of letters enclosg photographs of people livery, footmen and hoemat and so on and lady’s maids and everythg else, and they're wrg about their great grandparents who were service, and they did this and they did that. And I thk people have started to see that 's a way of life that belongs to all.”</p><p class=""><b>On the timg of the film at a moment when Bra is gog through turmoil </b></p><p class="nt-medium">“It wouldn't surprise me if people like to be able to take two hours off Brex for a change.
