All I had was an accepted applitn to a graduate certifite program at NYU where, when asked why I wanted to move to New York to study the publishg dtry, I said, “I want to change the face of gay media.”</p><p>No, actually. I really wrote that. At the time, the grand spe of the queer mediaspe nsisted of <em>OUT</em>, <em>The Advote</em>, <em>Huffgton Post Gay Voic</em> — and yeah, that’s sentially . And those publitns are all fe and good, but the big problem was that I didn’t see myself any of them. Where were the stori that go beyond whichever athlete me out of the closet that day? Where was gay reprentatn beyond sassy athet, drag queens, edic acplic, melodramatic tragedi, and promiscuo sluts? To be fair, I self-intify as all of those thgs, to varyg gre and var moments. But what about the tim that I’m not any of those thgs?</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>It’s a tale queer people know all too well. I craved stori of everyday life beyond riture — of heartbreak, mental health, and the very average, unsexy stggl of a morn day queer.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="w2hx"></div></div><p>Ls than a month after arrivg New York, I wanred to the perdil sectn of Manhattan’s ol-kid bookstore, McNally Jackson, and found the first issue of <em>Hello Mr.</em> perched on the shelf. I didn’t even know was a queer journal, but I picked up tuively, like a gay sixth sense. Page after page, I flipped through profil and says, pletely enraptured. “How did they know I <em>also</em> loved this queer web seri?” “Oh, they <em>also</em> disvered this obscure Barcelonian Tumblr artist!?” “Wa, they <em>also</em> read this David Halper book?!” I felt myself reflected over and over aga a way I had never felt before. And then I realized:</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p><em>Fuck</em>, <em>someone already did .</em> Someone already changed the face of gay media.</p><p>I uldn’t even afford the prt magaze on my post-llege budget, so I immediately went home and purchased on my Generatn 1 iPad, then read ont to back. That night, I emailed the <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">creator and edor--chief</a> of the magaze on an eager-beaver whim to say, “Hi!
