I feel like ually those mils tend to be a ltle b more mercial, a ltle b more for the mastream dience. So when I first found out that this show had a character that I related to so much, I was like, <em>This feels like sty.</em></p><p>I’m such a huge pop mic fan, and so many of my favore pop songs were the mil, so I was jt like, <em>This feels like somethg that I have to be a part of one way or the other.</em> I was really hopeful that one day, somehow, I uld jo the multiverse of <em>& Juliet</em> and happened.</p><p><strong>Max Mart is a geni and has so many credible songs. I thought was powerful to see “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” ed to further the emotnal journey of a nonbary character. Did you have any prev nnectn to the song and how did you approach terpretg for May?</strong></p><p>I grew up a very relig, nservative hoehold, and the time when Brney Spears was really her prime, I was not allowed to listen to Brney Spears. So that song actually wasn’t super my wheelhoe of go-to OG pop songs. When I first listened to the London st rerdg, I was jt awe of hearg those words and hearg the lyrics tell a story that I felt like at the time I uld see myself ronatg wh. I had been grapplg wh my genr inty for some time, but wasn’t until 2020 that I really stepped to my nonbary inty. Revisg that song once I had the opportuny to dn, which was 2021, I got to tackle [] a new way. I really got to reimage every le and fd what that means to me.</p><p>It’s almost unnny how much tth I fd those lyrics and sgg that song, feelg like I’m ught the middle. Bee prr to , ’s a huge party scene and I thk that moment the show was so special bee ’s one of the only moments that is more timate and more stripped-down. [It’s also] a moment where I’m relatg to one of my bt girliends, which is somethg that I feel like as queer people, we often jt have that person that we n tst wh everythg no matter what we’re alg Oftentim, I was steered away om makg certa thgs too edic. There were tim when they would tweak the script jt so that didn’t make seem like May was always the bnt of the joke. May is given the opportuny to show their heart and to show the difficulti of relatnships. And queer relatnships are jt as plex and jt as real and raw as heterosexual relatnships. People who e to see the show and are jt like, <em>I know the songs</em>, <em>I’m gog to e see a Broadway show and have a good time</em>, might not be exposed to queer love stori. In May’s journey, we get to see all of the different stag of fdg love, fallg love, and fightg for somethg that you really believe .</p><p><strong>It’s an tertg reversal bee ually, like you said, queer people help the ma character fd their love tert. And queer people ually learn to accept themselv or somethg. And this one, ’s about Juliet acceptg herself and then she gets to help a queer person fd love.</strong></p><p>And May is troduced as someone who already exists. In “I Kissed a Girl,” which is a big moment of the show where the love between May and Franis, May is explag that they’re not a girl and Franis back wh, <em>That don’t matter to me</em>. <em>I jt like kissg you</em>. We had 16 Broadway buts this show, which is almost unheard of, which is so excg. Our show is beloved by so many people, and I meet people at the stage who are tellg me they’ve e and seen the show 16 tim, which is unreal, unbelievable. But I thk that’s the reason. I want Broadway to not be aaid to tell queer stori and not be aaid to show queer characters. We are here and we are ready to tell our own stori.</p><p>I was an absolute nobody that me om nowhere. And now here I am gettg to walk my sty. And I thk all took was that one chance.
