Many of the pulps directed at gay men were published long before Stonewall or the victori of the morn gay rights movement, so thors wrote unr psdonyms to avoid anti-gay laws, <a href=">acrdg to New York Universy’s gay and lbian pulps archive</a>.</p><p class="">Brown’s archive was born wh a purchase 1997 and grew wh bequts om Stt O’Hara, a pornographic film actor and wrer, and Jam Jackson, a llector.</p><p class="">The latter half of the 20th century saw a cultural shift toward the acceptance of LGBTQ+ people that laid the groundwork for Brown’s llectn, says Cole. In the past 30 years, she adds, universi have reevaluated what works serve attentn.</p><p class="nt-medium">“Now we’re all terted what else is happeng, whose voic aren’t reprented the kd of llectns, who may not have been thought worthy of beg llected,” says Cole.</p><p class="">Today, Brown’s gay pulps llectn is one of the biggt llectns — if not the biggt — anywhere.</p><p class="">The pulps are ually stored offse, but Cole wheels three rdboard box full of them to a nference room at the Hay. A rponse form "<a href=">Fort Cowboy</a>" by Larry Woodward asks rears to rank the sexual scenars they’d like to see future books: guys as jocks, guys at blue llar work, guys on mp. As part of an unrgraduate fellowship program, he’ll spend his summer at the Hay workg on a project partly about fan culture, g the pulps as a rource.</p><p class="">He se the pulps as vehicl for people to disver different muni and inti.</p><p class="nt-medium">“Gay pulp novels provid people a way to see what life uld be like, no matter how unrealistic or how fantastil they are,” says Colls. “I thk that fantasy is really important, pecially when you’re lookg at the fantasy of people who uld not exprs publicly.”</p><p class="">Brown’s llectn ends wh pulps om the '90s, when the rise of the ter ma porn accs easier and buyg pulps unnecsary, Cole says.</p><figure class="article-fig size-large"><a href="><picture><img class="size-large article-image" src=" alt="Pulp fictn Brown's llectn. And he speaks om experience. He grew up hearg stori about people who knew they were trans om childhood, but Colls himself “put two and two together” when he was olr. Readg fanfictn that re-imaged one of his favore characters as a trans man showed him other narrativ about genr.</p><p class="nt-medium">“I know that fanfictn was one of my troductns to trans inty,” Colls says.</p><p class="">Right now, Brown’s pulps llectn is foced on gay men, wh only a few lbian tl. The llectn is still beg taloged, but once that’s done, Cole says she is terted addg more books that ver the entire LGBTQ+ spectm.</p><p class="">Colls says we n’t fet the years of discrimatn that kept queer voic out of tablishment amic stutns. But both Colls and Cole agree the pulps are more than cheap, trashy paperbacks.</p><p class="nt-medium">“Even jt lookg at the physil gay pulps, sure, ’s a small porn novel.
