REVIEW: DRAMA ‘RETAKE’ TRIGUGLY PTUR HNTED GAY MAN’S REPLAY OF HIS PAST
A potentially prec and mdl nce gets an absorbg and trigug treatment “Retake, ” an imprsive road drama about a middle-aged gay man who hir a young htler to jo him on a life-changg ri to the Grand Watks (TV’s “One Life to Live, ” “Dperate Hoewiv”) plays Jonathan, a handsome, if sad and eply hnted guy attemptg to replay a -old trip he took wh an ex-lover named Brandon (Andrew Asper, flashback) who broke his that end, Jonathan picks up Adam (Devon Graye) on the streets of San Francis, dubs him “Brandon” and mak him reenact and role-play key moments of that pivotal 2005 journey, replete wh eerily exact Polaroid picture the l Jonathan impos on his rent boy — Adam mt wear Brandon’s cloth and logne, ask no probg qutns and adhere to a strict travel, dg and lodgg erary — are eventually upend as Adam unravels Jonathan’s agenda, loosens him up and mands more Adam prov not some shallow opportunist — nor a whore wh a heart of gold — but a perceptive and enarg fellow wh his own troubled past is jt one of many smart, sensive choic ma here by wrer-director Nick Corporon.
Essentially Retake featur a Vertigo-like make-over, though this one is gay and a ltle more downtown. Deeply unsatisfyg film which jt reunts over and over the dilemma of gay men who simply don't know how to love or munite to each other.
The actg is first rate but sadly is typil of the downers gay men have on themselv and perpetuat the ia of a dream lover we hurriedly move on om. This movie is why prsed gay men stay prsed. We already suffer through Brokeback Mounta and a ln other gay-themed films that n't possibly seem to be wrten EVER wh a happy endg.
RETAKE
Can we as gay men have our own "Pretty Woman? The gays on are too damn prsg.
Retake is another one of those films that I found lookg for a day the afternoon surfg the web bee I'm beg at home I'm bored wh nothg better to gay romantic drama tells about Jonathan who hir a male prostute lled Adam to recreate a road trip om his past and wh form advanc the same we disver about the misfortun of this man tormented by the experienc he had three years ago which n not fet the love of his life. I only chose a low-rated gay film to take a break om all the high ratgs I've been givg the past few days, but damm, this was hontly too good not given a high ratg. The script ptur the well-worn paths of longg and grief that's a mastay most homosexual stori.
