This month is LGBTQ+ History Month, an annual observance of lbian, gay, bisexual, transgenr, and queer history, that tak place throughout the UK every Febary. To ntue sheddg light on LGBTQIA+ histori and experienc, I wanted to share a fantastic project for the lol area, lled ‘Gay Birmgham Remembered’, led by the Birmgham LGBT muny tst. “By ensurg that a diverse range of LGBT dividuals, muny groups and mercial ventur have ntributed to the project, we have rerd the procs of transn om a time when homosexual acts were illegal and people met behd unmarked doors back streets, to the current vibrant and open gay muny Birmgham.

From a time when gay men and lbians lived fear of hostily and reprisals om the police, the workplace and on the streets, to a cy which hundreds of rints have registered their civil partnership and thoands take to the streets durg the Gay Pri Ftival. Where once, statutory and mercial agenci didn’t even acknowledge the existence of lbians and gay service ers or regnise that they might have particular needs, to a posn where Birmgham LGBT Communy Tst and s Fom of 35+ LGB groups are routely asked to participate nsultatns or ntribute to strategic velopments.
