The fact that K Connor felt forced to e out is disgtg, and speaks to so many risg issu rooted onle culture.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>When vlatns like this happen, robs someone of the very ltle power they have as a queer person an antiquated society, the agency to choose when and how they will e out. K has been a force for change. His work <em>Heartstopper</em> has spired people all over the world to <a href=">illumate their tth</a>. But that kd of discsn is gettg msier and msier as people bee more willg to engage wh fluidy, themselv and other people. Their behavr is yet another way to enforce a bary, set a le book, and boil down the rich and plex experience of queerns to somethg palatable for the mastream.</p><p>There are tg of biphobia at play, too; the expectatn that <a href=">someone isn’t queer enough</a>, or that a bisexual man isn’t queer if he’s a relatnship (or seen public) wh a woman. Too often, people falsely assume that bi people are pretendg, n’t make up their md, or are gog through a phase. The sad realy is that this mentaly has a stronghold wh the queer muny self.</p><p>Back April, before the lnch of <em>Heartstopper</em>, I <a href=">spoke wh K Connor and Joe Locke</a> about the amazg bety of queerns, but we also had a nversatn surroundg queer people playg queer rol. I noted that recent years the disurse has veered towards the notn that some actors playg queer characters might simply not be out.</p><p>“One of the thgs that Alice [Oseman, who created the <em>Heartstopper</em> webic] touch on nstantly is the ia of not puttg prsure on people, and I feel like the nature of beg a show like this n lead to those kds of qutns beg asked like that,” K said at the time. “Although ’s an extremely important qutn to be asked, I thk also n be a b harmful for actors and for people volved bee sometim ’s okay to not really unrstand your sexualy as well. I thk that’s a perfectly normal thg.”</p><p>Joe add, “Sexualy’s beg so much more of a fluid thg, and that’s a great thg. I thk that hopefully we n move to a place society where is more fluid and people aren’t assumed to be anythg.”</p><p>Of urse, there’s a valid argument that after s of playg send fiddle to heterosexual actors, queer actors serve to play queer rol. That equy should be rrected. But there are dark implitns when leadg wh this expectatn that somebody should be out and proud orr to play a role. The nversatn is nuanced, certaly more extensive than n be discsed 140 characters on Twter. A month after our nversatn, May, K tweeted, “Twter is so funny man. Apparently some people on here know my sexualy better than I do…”</p><p>Sometim labels are great, they help thgs make sense. For others, labels are stiflg, and so five. “They n give you a certa level of nfince who you are, and a certa level of unrstandg but at the same time they n also be extremely limg. And I thk that ’s an extremely important bate to be havg, but at the same time, ’s not somethg to speculate about, if that mak sense,” K told me earlier this year. “Some people eher might not be out yet, or jt might not really know, might still be a b nfed and not ready to talk about that.” Ultimately, the only te qualifier of beg queer is… beg queer. It’s simply not worth riskg their reer to even discs — and at the end of the day, there is worth the ntent self, puttg more queer stori on screen.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Miss Sgh, Tham’s gby ach, says bt the webic: “You n’t tell whether people are gay by what they look like” (bee genr exprsn do not equal sexualy). “And gay or straight aren’t the only two optns” (bee sexualy is a spectm). “Anyway ’s very to speculate about people’s sexualy” (bee you n’t lculate someone’s inty).</p><p>Real people do not exist for your nsumptn. You do not have accs to actors beyond the pixels they fill on your screen. You have no right to their private liv. Your accs to K Connor starts wh “Nick” and ends wh “Nelson.” He never did and still do not owe anythg. The st of <em>Heartstopper</em> might share fun moments on social media, bee they’re all iends. The st of <em>Heartstopper</em> are not <em>your</em> iends.
