ER’S DR. WEAVER HONORED BY GAY RIGHTS GROUP
Actrs Lra Inn received this year's Artistry Award om the gay rights anizatn Power Up for her portrayal of a gay character on the h medil drama "ER." * is dr weaver gay *
The producers of ER should be ld for actually keepg Lra Inn’s workaholic character gay over the past four years, but ER‘s foc on Dr. ER is obvly playg out this straed mother-dghter rnn to make a timely reference to the rift between gays and nservative Christians sce last year’s electn-geared attack on gay marriage (a topic Wife Swap tackled last week too). Inn do an excellent job of makg ER‘s ocsnally tired l emotnally ronant, and of realistilly showg the unrbelly of self-flicted shame her character’s admissn of gayns even as she attempts to assert her sexualy proudly and unabashedly to her mother, who she knows will be bative.
She remds her mom of her prevly-voiced exprsn that “All J’ children are perfect, ” and the two argue oppose sis of whether gay children, too, are due God’s unndnal love. Romano was an unrepentant jerk—sexist, homophobic, overwhelmgly obnox and pathologilly obssed wh beg ntrol.
Appearg before Weaver me out, she was the show's first major gay character (although her orientatn was much more obliquely referenced) and jt the kd of admirable no-nonsense physician ER had plenty of the early seasons.
