Begng 1991, wh DC Black Pri, the Black Gay Pri movement began as a way to provi Black LGBTQ+ people an alternative to the largely whe mastream LGBTQ+ movement serv as a way for Black LGBTQ+ people to discs specific issu that are more unique to the Black LGBTQ+ muny and celebrate the progrs of the Black LGBTQ+ muny.

While the mastream gay pri movement, often perceived as overwhelmgly whe, has foced much of s energy on same-sex marriage, the Black Gay Pri movement has foced on issu such as racism, homophobia, and lack of proper health and mental re black muni. Attendg events and seeg people who look like onelf wh many of the same shared experienc, ntribut to buildg stronger, healthier LGBT muni and is an effective way to bat homophobia and stigma the Black muny and racism the greater LGBT muny along wh overg the cultural, munal and stutnal barriers created by isms and phobias.
