WHY AM I GAY? (A BOOK REVIEW ON THE SCIENCE OF DIRE)
* why am i gay book *
New York, NY: Simon and a surprisgly entertag way, rearcher Dean Hamer, wh the help of wrer Peter Copeland, scrib wh great tail, personaly, and rear-iendly scientific explanatns about the disvery of a lkage between male homosexualy and DNA markers on the X chromosome.
In the thor’s own words, his goal wrg this book is “to scribe what we found g the tools of morn geics, how blogil fdgs n broan rather than narrow our unrstandg of the diversy of human sexual exprsn” (15) do not assume that the procs by which a male be gay and how a female be lbian is necsarily the same, and his search for a gay gene this study is limed to mal. Inially, Hamer traced the leag of gay men, lookg for signs of homosexualy among relativ. This search revealed a disproportnate number of gays on the mother’s si of the fay rather than the fathers.
Bee of the strong rrelatn wh the mother’s si of the fay, Hamer nclud that if a gene is rponsible for homosexualy, will be found on the X maximize the rearch, Hamer cid that while he was llectg a large sample of gay men to study, he might as well explore other issu at the same time. He add three addnal areas of foc to his proposal for fundg: the impact of homosexualy on AIDS, alhol e and abe, and mental health.
I LIKE GUYS BUT I DON’T WANT TO BE GAY. HOW DO I STOP BEG GAY?
Men beg attracted to another man emotnally, physilly, and mentally are known as gays. Fd out if you're gay wh our quiz. * why am i gay book *
Wh a team and fundg place, Hamer set out to attract the two separate groups of gay men he need to serve as subjects of his rearch. Through a newspaper advertisement tled, “Gay Men – Do You Have a Gay Brother? ” Hamer attracted one group of gay men who were known to have gay brothers.
The other group of gay men was selected randomly through var anizatns that served gay men. There was no prr knowledge about whether or not this sample of men has gay relativ.
OK, I GIVE UP. WHY AM I GAY?
<p>As a 15-year-old, teen thor (and current Queen of Teen) Jam Dawson was fearful and ashamed of beg gay and so hid his sexualy. Now he's wrten This Book Is Gay – for all those teenagers who are hidg and anyone else whatever their genr or sexualy</p> * why am i gay book *
The agenci he drew om clud: the HIV Clic of the Natnal Instute of Allergy and Infect Disease, the Whman-Walker Clic which serv gay s and lbians, and Emergence which is an anizatn formed by gay and lbian Christian verify that his rearch subjects were ed gay, Hammer terviewed them wh a keen eye on signifint variabl which lend support that his subjects were currently gay. He gathered rmatn about when each male first acknowledged his sexual orientatn to himself, and then to others, which raged om 13 to 50 years of age, wh the median beg securg enough rmatn to sure the men were verifiably gay, the next goal was to terme whether or not beg gay ns fai. Therefore, Hammer sought out gay brothers bee they “served as signposts that their fai were likely to have the gene for homosexualy, if such a gene existed” (107).
If this theory is accurate, Hammer predicted that the gay brothers will have a higher than average rate of both gay maternal uncl and gay maternal s. This is exactly what he disvered when he add up the totals om his ial qutn Hammer was tryg to answer was, “is there a nnectn between the marker and beg gay” (125)?
AM I GAY?
The first thg is to terme whether there was a gay gene near the marker. If every gay man had the same versn of the gene, then he would only have to tt about 10 fai to fd a satisfactory lkage wh statistil signifince.
Lastly, he need to terme how rmative the markers ttg 40 pairs of gay brothers for 22 different markers along the X chromosome, Hammer found that 33 of the 40 pairs (83 percent) were the same for a seri of 5 markers chromosome regn Xq28 (138). The third fdg was that gay men have more maternal than paternal male relativ who are also Hammer’s rearch reveals that there is a nnectn between homosexualy and gen, what this study did not reveal is the precise magnu of the role Xq28 has on sexual orientatn.
AM I GAY? QUIZ – 100% RELIABLE TT
” He further scrib that “the most important limatn of our rearch was that we didn’t’ isolate a “gay gene”; we only tected s prence through lkage. Ttg this theory, Jeremy Nathams pared the DNA sampl om 197 homosexual men agast DNA om 213 people om a study on visn (whom were assumed to be primarily heterosexual). He disvered no difference between the androgen receptors of gays and non-gays which put hol this third theory relat to the ia that there may be a nnectn between one’s handns and their sexual orientatn.
However, rearch revealed the same proportn of left-hand gay men as left-hand non-gay men. Intertgly, though, Hammer disvered that among the gay brothers his sample, 43 percent of the gay/non-gay brothers pared to 6 percent of the gay/gay brothers had oppose handns.
This rais the qutn for Hammer about whether some men are gay bee of gen and others bee of differenc bra velopment that rrelate wh last theory relat to the hypothalam, and the fluence of Xq28 on the bra’s stcture or chemil activy.

In 1992 Simon LeVay rearched the bras of ceased gay and non-gay men, and measured the differenc size of their hypothalam (more specifilly a small group of cells lled the third terstial nucls of the anterr hypothalam, or INAH-3). He disvered that the INAH-3 gay men is three tim smaller than is non-gay men. He was cricized, however, for havg a disproportnately high number of gay mal who died of AIDS, though rearch on heterosexuals that died of AIDS also had the larger INAH-3.
Chapter ten tak the rear through a variety of potential psychologil fluenc on homosexualy, wh emphasis on how a gene might fluence one’s personaly or psychologil make-up ways that rult homosexualy. Through a discsn of “sissy gen” which studi genr atypil behavr childhood as a precursor to homosexualy as an adult, Hammer not that among the Xq28-nrdant gay brothers there were more siar childhood behavrs than there were among the Xq28-disrdant pairs.
This lends some crence to the ia that Xq28 may somehow modify or teract wh the factors rponsible for genr-atypil behavr (168) “bottoms-up gene” theory foc on the adult behavr that is “notably and measurably genr atypil, ” referrg to the sex acts preferred by gay men. However, upon closer examatn Hammer intified ltle rrelatn between the sexual activi preferred and engaged by the gay brothers his “Self-Sufficiency Gene” theory suggts that Xq28 ntas a gene for the personaly tra lled self-sufficiency which Hammer did not fd any strong support for.
WHY MY BOOK IS GAY: AND I'M PROUD OF
Concludg that Xq28 fluenc somethg related to how someone adjts to their homosexual orientatn – for example if two boys have gay fantasi as a child, perhaps one child has the gene Xq28 leadg him to dulge those fantasi, whereas the other may lack that gene and choose stead to supprs the gay fantasi to adapt heteronormatively. ”In chapters eleven and twelve, Hammer explor Frdian fluenc on our thkg about homosexualy and then turns his foc to the role of evolutn and the gen’ ultimate goal of survival. He remds the rear that one of the ma goals of his project was to intify gen that accelerate the AIDS vis, and promptly nfs that they didn’t have enough fai to fd a geic lk to the AIDS progrsn and they had too many fai wh alhol and substance nducted this rearch amidst a particularly charged polil climate for gays and lbians, wh then print Bill Clton troducg a Department of Defense Directive requirg that the ary and gays strike an agreement of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
One of the greatt ncerns by gay advot about the lotn of a gay gene is the ultimate mise of geic rearch to e this rmatn to eher asss, or ntrol, on sexual outl three ma reasons he do not support geic manipulatn of human sexualy.
GAY SPIR: WHY AM I GAY? UNRSTANDG GAY SEXUALY
One, he stat that both gay and non-gay orientatns are normal.
He also seeks to migate fears that opponents of his rearch exprsed about the mise of a blood tt that may reveal a person’s sexual orientatn by assurg the rear that they did not actually isolate a gene – jt a many of the crics of geic rearch I fd myself qutng the need to search for an explanatn about why some people are gay and others are not.
