The crowd is multigeneratnal, boppg to Bowie unr the glow of purple lights. They’re cked out mh shirts, 7-ch platform boots, and no shortage of leather harns.</p><p class="">This night has been a long time g. ManRay was the heart of alternative nightlife Cambridge throughout the 1980s and ‘90s. When shuttered 2005, beme the stuff of legend, a symbol of old weird Cambridge voked whenever another treasured neighborhood club closed s doors. This month, reopened (at a different lotn), after an 18-year hiat.</p><p class="">Cody Publiver is one of the hundreds who donned their party cloth and scend on ManRay s first week.</p><p class="nt-medium">“I love ridiculo outfs,” Publiver says. “So I’m currently wearg a sloth, ridg a Tyrannoss rex, shootg laser beams out of the ey, while wearg floral pants.”</p><p class="">Jt to be clear — ’s the T. rex, not the sloth, that’s shootg laser beams out of s ey, and Publiver is the one wearg the floral pants, not the dosr. He’s a regular at Hero. (Jse Costa/WBUR)</figptn></figure><p class="nt-medium">“Hero is the most welg night to ever exist the entire world,” he says. “Everyone is wele to e and dance and e chaos and be happy.”</p><p class="">Publiver is thrilled that Hero has returned to the place of s birth — but the 32-year-old is too young to have ever danced at the origal ManRay.</p><p class="">There are others here who do remember the old club, like secury staff Jojo D'Chanel. He surveys the crowd om a rner near the bar, and rells how he started out as a gogo dancer back the ‘80s.</p><p class="nt-medium">“It was kd of a novelty, and I would drs up elaborate stum,” he says. “My motto is: if don’t f, make f. If fs, wear .”</p><p class="">D'Chanel says when he heard ManRay was reopeng, he jumped at the chance to work there aga.</p><p class="nt-medium">“I mean, I go out to nightclubs. I see more people on their phon than on the dance floor,” he says. “But look at tonight. Everyone’s on the dance floor.”</p><p class="">The abily to njure a bygone era is a big part of ManRay’s draw. The origal club was found by Donald Holland at a spot on Brookle Street and served a largely queer clientele. It was the se of a popular Thursday seri, Camp, billed as a night for “gay men and their iends.”</p><p class="nt-medium">“For 23 years, my dad mand Thursday nights,” says Cheryl Holland, Donald’s dghter. “Everybody went to Camp.”</p><p class="">Camp will return on Thursdays at the new ManRay — a boon for a town where queer nightlife has dwdled.</p><p class="">But the old ManRay wasn’t jt a gay bar. On the club’s famed fetish nights, a domatrix named Mistrs Mimi prid over a play dungeon wh whips and paddl.</p><figure class="article-fig size-full"><a href="><picture><img class="size-full article-image" src=" alt="Chris Ewen works behd the soundboard as he sets up the sound system at ManRay. (Jse Costa/WBUR)</figptn></figure><p class="">The club also beme a prime spot for goth, dtrial and new wave mic thanks to DJ Chris Ewen, who ntued his popular nights at other clubs around town after ManRay closed. “We didn't disappear when ManRay disappeared. So the fact that we were there dog thgs was, I thk, really important,” says Ewen, who will sp three nights a week at the rurrected ManRay.</p><p class="">The origal club shuttered 2005 to make way for apartments. Cheryl Holland says her dad tried to retire — but didn’t really take.</p><p class="nt-medium">“He's one of those people that nnot jt s still,” she says. “He's like, ‘I gotta open ManRay, I have to open ManRay. I jt n't s around. I’m gog crazy.’”</p><p class="">Over the years, the Hollands tried and failed to rurrect the bs  different plac.</p><p class="">ManRay hosts and promoter Xte Santackas says throughout this, the muny was steadfast. A ManRay rnn at Paradise Rock Club sold out 2015.</p><p class="nt-medium">“At that pot, we knew we uldn't let Donald and Cheryl give up hope,” Santackas says. “They had to fd someplace. They stalled a wheelchair ramp, sprklers, and brand new sound and light systems — and, of urse, pated the terr black.</p><p class="">At long last, the ManRay crowd n e home to roost.</p><p class="nt-medium">“This is where we kd of e to be ourselv,” says Santackas. "This is the place that we feel fortable. This is our safe space.”</p><p class="">On Saturday, feels like old tim at ManRay — although, Santackas do kick one person out for vapg si.</p><p class="">That’s a problem she didn’t have to al wh before. But the prence of the new is somethg ManRay will need to cultivate if ’s gog to survive.
