I agree wh Sandi, that you should not have a problem and that nobody (gay or straight) should engage public displays of affectn Tanzania. But you need to know that as a culture Tanzanians are more homophobic then most.

However, there is a general misnceptn of homosexualy Zanzibar. In the Swahili language there are no specific words for Homosexual bis "Basha" or "Msenge" which means somethg along the l of Top or Bottom! Further to that an old outdated law, nmng gay men up to ath penalty, was effectively existg till the early year 2000 and has been replaced by another law replacg ath penalty by a prison sentence...
The reactn om the gay muny has been very harsh and didn't try to look behd of what was really happeng.
It damaged the gay segement of the market om the Tourism Indtry! In a nutshell, as far as I know only 3 hotels (Tembo, Dhow Palace and Mare Hotel) on the Island have a reputatn of been homophobic, the rt is pretty much tolerant...
