William Armistead "Tacky" Gayle, Jr. was an Amerin polician for the Democratic Party, soldier and wrer who was the mayor of Montgomery, Alabama, om 1951 to 1959. Gayle was born 1896, the son of William A. and Mary Gayle. He served durg World War I the Uned Stat Navy, havg attend the Uned Stat Naval Amy. He later attend the Universy of Alabama om 1915 to 1916. After the war, he worked for the Anrson Coal Company as a manager. Gayle, who held the rank of Brigadier General, was appoted by Governor Bibb Grav on April 2, 1935 to serve as Adjutant General of Alabama. He prevly served as Assistant Adjutant General Grav' admistratn. Durg World War II, Gayle returned to active duty, servg the Uned Stat Army Air Forc. After the war, he would ntue to serve the Alabama Natnal Guard.

Gayle was said to have remarked, “ the first ray day and the Negro will be back on the the Black muny held fast and strengthened their rolve, spired by ongog mass meetgs led by muny and church lears. Gayle March 1954, the uncil's members outled the chang they sought for Montgomery’s b system: no one standg over empty seats; a cree that black dividuals not be ma to pay at the ont of the b and enter om the rear; and a policy that would require b to stop at every rner black rintial areas, as they did whe muni.
When the meetg failed to produce any meangful change, WPC print Jo Ann Robson reerated the uncil’s requts a 21 May letter to Mayor Gayle, tellg him, “There has been talk om twenty-five or more lol anizatns of planng a cy-wi boytt of b” (“A Letter om the Women’s Polil Council”). A year after the WPC’s meetg wh Mayor Gayle, a 15-year-old named Cltte Colv was arrted for challengg segregatn on a Montgomery b. Gayle that b segregatn was unnstutnal, and November 1956 the U.
