Usually, I'd straighten my hair bee I hated when was curly, but when I left curly and saw a ltle later, jt gave me this androgyno kd of look that I had always wanted, and that was not even my tentn. The hair on my head is a huge ditor of my inty, but also my brows, my lash, and even my body hair. I have genred the hair on my body. It's easy to jt get braids, and not have to worry about . It's not even a matter of not likg my hair and more of a matter of not havg to do . This past year [durg the panmic], I've done my hair more than ever before. And I really don't md , but I jt don’t have the energy. The only thg is braids do feel a ltle monotono at tim, so I want to try somethg [different] soon.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>I feel a ltle weird talkg about this, but [the first time I got braids] was the first time I was really able to pass. Prr to that, I was wearg twists, and they grew out very quickly. The people who were stgglg to see me my transn kept seeg "me before." When I got the blon braids, like Beyoncé, the people who had seen me on mp for like four years would e up and ask who I was. It was jarrg, but was also affirmg to be seen as "jt a woman" whatever that means, pecially when you've jt started your transn.</p><p>In hdsight, I have a much more evolved unrstandg of my genr and how my prentatn relat to that. But when you're jt tryg to get through each day safely, you jt don't want to have to wonr, "Do they know?" It was the middle of Missouri, there are Neo Nazis. Throughout g out and unrgrad before I was the salon world, was all about, "<em>I</em> n ntrol this thg. <em>I</em> n bleach , get rid of , tease ." It's all about this ntrol and agency over my own body. Then gog to the salon world and learng how to do hair beme the oppose balance. How do we not exert ntrol, but let this live?</p><p>When you're a weird genr place, pecially wh a shaved head, for some people who jt want to be seen as eher mascule or void of genr, ’s so liberatg to be like, "I n take this away. Look at me this way." I’ve gotten to a place where, the more I talk about genr and move more to a nonbary space, the more I n be like, "How do I want to feel pretty?" I knew when I still had long hair. When you're someone who people perceive to be a woman and you tell them you want a short haircut, they're always thkg you still want to look feme. So I wish that wasn't so hard to fd a place to get my haircut where I still feel affirmed. I had somebody cut my hair, and I ually e clippers when I get my haircut, and she pulled out a razor. I told her that I ually get wh clippers, and she said, "Oh, you don’t e clippers bee clippers will give you a more mascule look, and razors will give you a softer look."</p><p>I jt thk that a queer haircut is an affirmg haircut. I don't thk has one look. If you've ever had that experience of beg like, "Oh <em>sh</em>. So I always ed my hair to try to dip to that feelg. But then I'd look at long hair and thk, "Maybe I want that, too." And that's when I started qutng myself on why I associate femy wh "pretty long, geo hair" and masculy wh shorter hair. That was somethg I've always thought about over the years whenever I get a haircut. I n mh every feelg to my look. I don't have to pick a si — I don't have to choose. And that's the bt part bee when you get one that you like, you're like, "I don't have to thk about the role and how I'm beg perceived. I n jt get a haircut, and that feels like home."</p><p>I recently orred the dumb cheap extensns onle, and I was like, let me play wh this. My hair has not been that long so long that I jt wanted to see. I thk stemmed om boredom, but I was like, "Oh wa a mute. Long hair is still so pretty." It's fun to treat hair as an accsory. I'm always absorbg everythg around me, whether 's my environment or what I like.
