If you have not read </span><em>A Separate Peace</em><span> (do they read outsi of New England? Ser qutn), here’s a quick synopsis WITH SPOILERS se you too read some high school classics as an adult: It’s 1944 and Gene go to a New England boardg school wh his iend Pheas, known as Fny. As a game, they jump out of this tree to a river until one day, when the two are on the branch together, Gene jounc the limb and Fny falls and jur himself. Fny s his athletic talent, whout knowg why he fell, and Gene spends the rt of the time wrtlg wh guilt (his own) and the horrors of humany ( general). When Fny breaks his leg a send time, and di durg a surgery, marks the loss of nocence totaly. The boys have bee men, unrstandg the dark tth of humanhood; peace is broken, and ’s off to the War.</span></p><p>OK now that we’re all ught up: I loved A Separate Peace growg up, and I never really knew why. I loved the characters, barely olr than I was at the time, and how they felt so many thgs I did: nfn, rage, joy. I love that Fny wore his tie as a belt. (I tried once or twice. The lerary reference was lost on my peers, and was hard to go to the bathroom.) I loved how I regnized the New England outsi my wdow those pag, and pecially loved the scriptns of the Devon mp. Stg my public school classrooms, I dreamed of gog to that boardg school wh the marble stairse and the gym across the field and the shared rooms and the smokg lounge the basement. I wanted to go back to my own room after class, not home. It sound amazg.</p><p>Another thg I loved: the iendship between Fny and Gene. Like, jt dus all livg together and jumpg out of tre holdg hands. It’s not explicly gay, pecially knowg this was butch WWII era, but feels a ltle, you know … [drops wrists]. </p><p><span>So when I re-read last week, I was kd of surprised to pick up on even more clu. Mrs. Stevenson nailed to our bras wrg “Knowl suggts …” our papers, to quote his wrg and jtify our own th. In readg, and wrg this, I kept thkg, </span><em>Knowl suggts </em><span>that he’s one of .</span></p><p>Take, for example, Knowl’ scriptn of Brker Hadley, the upper-classman who is heavily volved school polics, and, we later learn, kd of tty. In that first scene, our narrator, Gene, nfs that there isn’t much special about Brker “unls you saw him om behd” (79) , which, I unrstand as there are plenty of people I know om the gym who I scribe this way. (Also, y, I’m gog to quote the page numbers bee spe what Mrs. Stephenson said I’m not a C stunt.) Knowl ntu that his “gabarde jacket parted slightly over his healthy mp, and is that, whout any sense of risn at all, that I rell as Brker’s salient characteristic; those healthy, termed, not over-exaggerated but fe and substantial buttocks” (79).</p><p><span>That’s a full paragraph first meetg a character dited to the bety of his booty. His athletic buns look good that gabarde su and Knowl, via Gene, knows . </span><em>Knowl suggts</em><span> the bety of the male form through mcular, vg buttocks, which, when I was a teenage boy I certaly did not thk was normal to admire dus’ om behd and certaly not somethg I would wre all over page 79 of my novel. So, there’s that.</p><p><span>Take also Knowl’ scriptn of the school locker room, one that stood out for s “pungent air” where “sweat predomated … richly mgled wh smells of paraff and sged bber, of soaked wool and liment, and for those who uld terpret , of exhstn, lost hope and triumph and bodi battlg agast each other” (105). Those who uld terpret feels like a specific type of person </span><em>if you know what I mean</em><span>.</span></p><p>Knowl ntu, as the narrator, Gene: “I thought anythg but a bad smell. It was preemently the smell of the human body after had been ed to the lim, such a smell as has meang and poignance for any athlete, jt as has for any lover” (105).</p><p><span>Now, sex is never explicly mentned this (YA) novel, and practilly every character is male.
