In 1978 San Francis Gay Men’s Chos – the first choir wh an LGBTQ+ signifier s name - had only jt formed when openly gay polician Harvey Milk was assassated. Weeks later Tad Dunlap, a foundg member of the choir, set a speech of Milk’s to mic. His ‘I Unrstood’ is wily acknowledged to be the first ever gay-specific choral work. The followg years saw not only the formatn of numero LGBTQ+, predomantly gay, choirs across the USA, but a signifint ditn to the missng of new work.

Bristol Gay Men’s Chos only officially started January 2020, but already has 25 members.
Found by members of Sg Out Bristol, the cy’s queer muny choir, the choir is for specifilly the gay male muny the cy. “I’d wanted to start for years, ” says Ronan Bur, managg director of Sg Out and mic director for Bristol Gay Men’s Chos. Matthew Bolton, a foundg member of the choir, adds: “All the foundg members were part of Sg Out already, and we were spired by the gay men’s choirs we had seen perform at ftivals we went to.

The group started rmally October 2019, and the six foundg members disvered that there was a real need for a safe sgg space for gay men Bristol. At s heart, Bristol Gay Men’s Chos is a performance choir, separatg om Sg Out’s muny choir mol. The choir bas self off the gay men’s chos that have e before them.
The first gay men’s choirs started San Francis and Los Angel, before spreadg across the world, wh London Gay Men’s Chos startg 1991, and the movement spreadg across the UK – there are now choirs Brighton and Edburgh as well.
