ANTOE GAY - A "DEMONIC" POSSSN FOC
Gnger, a wrer om Lyons, has recently (1952) rerd the life and suffergs of Antoe Gay. Further he had a large number of letters, certifit and reports on Gay's posssn, which he had himself llected, and the life of Fr.
Chiron--who had taken a ep tert Gay--wrten by the Abbe Zephyr Gandon and, addn, the rellectns and evince of many persons who had actually known Antoe se gave rise, mt be said, to the most heated discsn. The thor of the book we are about to discs is nvced that the trials endured by Antoe Gay had a dive purpose, or, as we should ll , a faly, siar to that shown the se of Helene the se of Bernatte Soubiro, this purpose might be seen as the tentn of provg the existence of the supernatural a world creasgly given to doubt and crly.
The facts we are about to repeat are a se historyAntoe Gay was born at Lantenay, the partment of A, on 31st May 1790. The mon that posssed him was to adm later that he had been there for fifteen years, whout anyone, and least of all Gay, knowg anythg about .
DR. FRANIS-ANTOE GAY
By 1837 Antoe Gay was prey to terrible suffergs. Goulhiac, at that time Bishop of Grenoble, as follows:'We have examed Master Gay of Lyons three tim, each ssn lastg om one to two hours.
As is unniable that Gay do not know Lat, we n only attribute the ntortns which, view of the circumstanc, had somethg preternatural about them, to the prence of a higher telligence; (3) we qutned him several tim Lat and sce the repli were ma French through the mouth of Master Gay, this seems to dite a knowledge of Lat on the part of that higher telligence; (4) the good fah, virtue and scery of Master Gay are vouched for numero ttimonials livered to him by worthy and reliable persons. If the ttimoni are te, Gay is not playg tricks: that se, he mt be posssed.... Gay very refully, he was nvced that he was tly posssed.
Pictet, on 12th November 1843:'We, the unrsigned, doctor of medice, ridg at the Croix Rose, certify that Master Gay was prented to for examatn by the Abbe Collet and by M. Gay scpuloly every day for four months, at all tim and all suatns, such as at church, at mass, acpanyg him whilst he ma the Statns of the Cross, public and personal nversatn, at table, on walks, etc., we have not been able to disver the least sign of moral or physil weakns. Gay to implore the assistance of the Holy Spir, we rema nvced that his extraordary state n only be attributed to posssn.
