What should have been an era of visibily and acceptance has largely bee one of objectifitn and vlence. And such power imbalanc filter to the cultural sphere, changg how producers and curators document trans liv. <a href="><em>Trap Door: Trans Cultural Productn and the Polics of Visibily</em></a> is a cril anthology published by the New Mm New York that explor the false promis of gog mastream for trans and genrqueer people. Sadns fills Errázuriz’s voice when talkg about her work. “The were my iends, but most of them died of AIDS. They jt disappeared — polilly disappeared by the ernment.” A soberg thought, but <em>Another Kd of Life</em> rarely lets such moments lger. Translated as <em>Dance Floors</em> (2006), this photography seri picts several trans sex workers Tijuana, Mexi who are, as the wall text claims, “part of a landspe which and vastatn are the ma protagonists.” And hontly, that grim scriptn is not far off, bee Margoll stmentaliz the bodi of trans sex workers to marte stctn. Their bodi bee sculptural, nceptual props — an anthetil rult for an artist who undoubtedly wants to showse the rilience of her subjects. But there is a signifint difference between Errázuriz (who spent years beg like fay wh her subjects) and Margoll (who photographs at a distance).</p><p>The road to hell is paved wh good tentns. It’s a mon cliché, but an apt one. Pardo’s llapse of untercultural movements to one show downplays the stak of s queer subjects. Further, fails to properly sctize those photographers who enter so-lled outsir muni. Curators should help ntemporary dienc unrstand the ethil gray area that photographers like Diane Arb tread when they choose to exclively foc their work on supposed “eaks.” But the artists <em>Another Kd of Life</em> are rarely asked to jtify their tert “ge people.” It as no surprise that very few of the photographers the exhibn are themselv queer.</p><p>It’s 2018. Artists and curators should jtify their personal and fancial vtment the muni they ver. Drawg on llector Sébastien Lifshz’s archive of amatr photography, the show ntas a lany of crossdrsg subjects om the 1880s onwards. The exhibn is an allurg succs, but I uld have imaged fallg victim to the same criqu as <em>Another Kd of Life</em>. What do right is simple: The exhibn allows the photography to speak for self. Curatn is mimal. Wall texts typilly divi each room to a time perd and expla the social mor around homosexualy and genr, but not much else.</p><p>Like flippg through a long-fotten fay album, the imag remd me of Man M. Page’s say <em>Trap Door</em> about gossip and accs trans history-tellg. Page’s sential this here is that all history amounts to hot gossip. A nspiracy theory: What if, searchg through Lifshz’s archive of found photography, I stumbled across an image of my grandmother or grandfather drag? What about my great-grandmother or my great-great grandmother? How would the documents rm my inty as a genrqueer person? How uld they change my life? If history is hot gossip, then photography is a juicy tabloid ripe for queer nsumptn.</p><p><em>Another Kd of Life</em> has a siar room, but the ntext is pletely different. The found photography here is laid across a table as if were for stunts a forensics lab to study. The imag were taken at Casa Sanna, the se of a crossdrsers’ retreat the 60's. At the end of her say, Page clar that “Unverg and sharg our histori is a powerful tool for helpg dream our way to futur we want to live.” Seeg LGBTQ+ people on the cuttg room floor — or at the mercy of someone else’s narrative — priv of that tool. Instead of searchg through this archive, I wanted to steal them away, protect them.
