So why do you thk the class is important right now?</b></h4><p><b>Kate Rigg:</b> Tiffany, 's so important right now. In this untry, we're beg very asslted wh headl that are all about banng drag queens and "don't say gay." And everybody's flippg out over what your letter is or your pronoun is, or where you choose to empty your los the bathroom. Everybody's eakg out and 's havg repercsns on societal levels, polil levels, right down to school kids. It's on people's mds and I thk that 's very important for members of the queer muny, no matter what your letter is.</p><p>I thk 's so important right now bee we're beg told by a lot of media sourc that there's a kd of a cultural ambh for people who are jt tryg to live their liv and be part of the world wh everybody else. And I mean by that, queer people are gettg ambhed a ltle b about their very existence. If you don't live New York Cy or San Francis or on the ast or whatever, 's very difficult to speak tth to power if you don't have other imag of yourself to sort of follow, like lamp posts or guiposts along the way to feelg good about yourself.</p><p>And so, edy particularly is a way for to, like I said, build bridg. And even though we're New York Cy, first of all, a lot of people don't e om New York Cy who live here, who are gog to e study wh me. But also, we then have an opportuny as the graduat of the class move out to the muny and do shows or maybe jt are funnier at work or have a ltle more power and sort of unrstandg of how to tell their story.</p><p>Clearly, we have a real opportuny to make a difference and be funny and be ol. And a supportive space like this, where there's only other queer people, is the ial place, pecially when you're first startg out, to start learng how to wre your story a way that n be heard and appreciated.</p><h4><b>Well, I want to dig to this class now. It's not jt for novic. If I sign up for this, what's gog to look like for me?</b></h4><p>I feel like this class, 's more like a lab.</p><p>Okay, so you're a class. I would like to also pot out that Manhattan Comedy School had the great sight to do this last semter. It was the first ever LGBTQ+ class offered at a profsnal edy school New York Cy.</p><p>Andy [Engel] lled me up. He's the director. And he said, "Do you want to do this class?" And at first I was like, "I don't know if we need this class. Like, edy is edy. Funny is funny. Maybe we jt need to fold gay ics and queer ics to regular edy class."</p><p>But then when I started really pollg my lleagu, like other queer ics, we started rememberg together how difficult is to fd your voice to wre eely. When you're always wonrg if someone is homophobic that's lookg at you, you jt don't know.</p><p>And so, what I disvered by dog this class was all kds of people showed up to this class. There were gay people, there were lbian people, there were trans people. There was an actual drag queen. There was young people, people om all different untri of all different experienc. And we actually, wh this ltle 20 person class, a muny started formg immediately, and people were listeng crilly to each other's work, but om a very passnate pot of view, and support and passn is what you need as any kd of public speaker to really grow quickly.</p><p>So what you expect is you e the class, I do a lson at the begng, a ltle lson. I assign homework for the next week, which has to do wh the nuts and bolts of buildg a set, learng how to wre a punchle, learng what the different kds of jok are. And then everybody shows two mut on a microphone jt ont of the club, like a lab.</p><p>You perform your two mut, and then at the end of the six weeks, you do an credible profsnal show at the Gotham Comedy Club.
