Bety salons, real tate agenci, the Multnomah County Branch Library, SMILE (the Sellwood Moreland Improvement League neighborhood associatn), and an creasg number of mixed-e apartment buildgs offer a variety of servic to rints, as well as to those who are jt there for the day. </p><p> After brief cyhood the late 1800s, Sellwood was jt a small ral part of Portland the early Twentieth Century — far om the htle and btle that characteriz the muny today. Sellwood's first mercial district was actually tablished along Umatilla Street, bee nnected rints to Portland by way of the Willamette River. What me by boat and ferri parted the same way — that is, until the east si streetr le arrived 1892, built along 13th Avenue. </p><div class="nb-ad-placeholr"></div><p> The streetrs, nng on rails embedd what was then still a dirt street, turned the sleepy hamlet to a growg market town jt a few short years. Small fay-owned bungalows and false-ont retail shops were sparsely sttered along 13th Avenue. They began to be joed by barber shops, pharmaci, nfectnari, and the Sellwood Fire Hoe. Small grocery stor and meat markets uld be found every two to three blocks along the street for the nvenience of rints. </p><p> By 1910, succsful entreprenrs Aled Grisen, William Strahlman, and J.P. Zirngieben had built the first of three two-story streetr mercial buildgs at Spokane and Umatilla Streets. The edor of THE BEE, which by then was four years old, cid was time to move his prtg prs over to 13th and Teno, bee that's where all the actn was. </p><div class="nb-ad-placeholr"></div><p> A later, 13th Avenue was also an entertament district — as "The Star", "The New Sellwood", and "the Isis" Movie Ho were showg picture shows every eveng for those venturg out to 13th and Spokane for the latt movi — which were, before long, to bee "talki". </p><p> The Great Deprsn of the 1930s slowed bs, and a few shops closed their doors for good. But an enomic rurgence the 1940s — first om WWII productn, and then om the postwar prospery — brought a new look to 13th Avenue. Now, rad and televisn shops piqued rints' tert, along wh other new bs along the btlg street. </p><p> Wh the start of the 1950s, penntly-owned shops owned by lol rints were givg way to storeonts wh odd nam: Baileys Buffg, L & M Cha Saw Equipment Company; and the Sellwood Metal Fishers. Those uld be found south of Taa Street, while children on bik darted by signs advertisg servic for Panel Craft Electronics and Pacific Platg Works to the north of Taa. </p><div class="nb-ad-placeholr"></div><p> For sure, rints still supported their small grocery stor — Sam Wollos, Fairleys, and the Sellwood Market — but they often would also wanr over to the Piggly Wiggly market on Taa Street, or the new Kienow's Wtmoreland, to check out their weekly specials, too. (What was once Piggly Wiggly, an early natnal food cha, is today Sellwood's New Seasons Market — and the former Kienow's is now QFC Market.) </p><p> Once the 1960s arrived, stor built the 1900s were startg to look old and n down. New bs me and went every two to three years, and many buildgs sat vant. The newer muny of Wtmoreland had bee the more appealg mercial district for weekend shoppg; the Monarch Pharmacy, the Cor variety store, and tchg a movie at the Moreland Theater were among the draws for neighbors at the time. </p><div class="nb-ad-placeholr"></div><p> Ladi' clothg shops were numero on Milwkie Avenue, and every child and father wanted to stop at Graham's Five Ten and Twenty Five Cent Store, then perhaps on to the Pepper Mill Rtrant and Lounge for lunch or dner. Wh all this actn gog on Wtmoreland, the merchants of Thirteenth Avenue Sellwood were seekg a rurgence — and when me, was led by a class of bs that not many saw g. </p><p> Barber shops and bety salons were still high mand along the Avenue, as were var dry cleaners. The only plac that seemed to draw a crowd were s lol taverns: The Black Cat, once a zy ltle breakfast and fé, was now a tavern on the northeast rner of 13th and Umatilla — and there was also the Cozy Tavern at 13th and Teno. Even the good old sandwich shop and workgmen's favore afternoon lunch spot — the Lepzig Tavern, at 13th and Spokane — was now a bar. What Sellwood and Wtmoreland were need of, turned out, was neighborhood antique shops! </p><div class="nb-ad-placeholr"></div><p> In the 1950s, antique shops and sendhand stor were jt startg to draw middle class and well-to-do fai. Those who uld ill afford the pricey ems specialty shops Portland's downtown bs district, or the spendy ems at the big partment stor, uld get now qualy furnure and furnishgs at barga pric at any Antique Store. </p><p> As early as 1958 the Cy of Portland boasted close to 27 Antique Dealers, as listed the Portland Cy Directory. None then was loted close to the Sellwood and Wtmoreland, but dividually-owned shops were sttered through var districts the Rose Cy. Few merchants uld afford to buy bs property, so often the cheapt rental spac were where you would fd an Antique Store — and, after a uple of years, when rents had creased, the stor were forced to move to another part of Portland. It was tratg for both patrons and bs owners. But the thought was startg to spread that if such shops uld be grouped together one sectn of town, that might benef both sellers and buyers. </p><a href=" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img src=" alt=" width="300" height="250"/></a><a name="Advertisg_4"></a><p><img src=" alt=" width="800" height="560"/> It was Sellwood that Elizabeth Fowler and Earl Taylor nceived the ia of openg a shop hopg to attract other sirable alers to the area. Some ten to twelve buildgs were vant along 13th Avenue at that time, and ho along 13th uld be bought and turned to ltle shops for relatively low st — an antique merchant's dream. </p><p> In 1964 Elizabeth Fowler opened "The 1874 Hoe" what was once a sectn of the Sellwood Movie Theater on the southeast rner of 13th and Spokane. Earl Taylor started his Sellwood Antiqu shop not far om the 1874 Hoe, later on changg the name of his store to the Sellwood Antiqu and Refishg Store. </p><p> Like most other Antiqu bs the Portland, the 1874 Hoe offered the same standard ems for browsers to choose om — ttype photos, hurrine and kerosene lamps, a fair selectn of glassware and fancy perfume bottl. But was out the back room where Liz Fowler stored her good stuff! </p><p> Contractors and rejuvenators me to the new antique alers of Sellwood specifilly to hunt for hard-to-fd hardware — old nails, screws, and tools. Stacks of bannisters, baltras, rative mantels, and doors — along wh var siz and shap of paned wdows and marble bass -- leaned agast the walls. Most of the archectural ems the 1874 Hoe me om some of Portland's fabulo mansns — Queen Anne and Craftsman style hom that no longer stood on Portland's street rners. Artists and rpenters who refurbished many of the McMenam Rtrants the regn unvered some of Liz Fowler's prized fds her ltered back room. </p><p> Magaz like Good Hoekeepg, Sunset, and Country Livg began emphasizg that old heirlooms and old furnure and merchandise which was once owned by our parents and grandparents uld today be rsed as sirable dér. And the crowds flockg to Sellwood by the hundreds began surg the neighborhood, searchg through antique shops lookg for such ems to enhance their hom. </p><p> Suated between the Eastmoreland neighborhood to the east, and the town of Lake Oswego to the southwt across the Willamette River, Sellwood was beg a haven for hoewiv and llectors shoppg for pre-owned furnure and other hoewar. They no longer had to spend long hours drivg om one neighborhood or district to another, search of a perfect piece to place the livg room or parlor of their home. </p><p> It didn't take other store owners long to realize that settg up an antique shop along 13th Avenue Sellwood uld be a bonanza. By 1972, specialty shops like The Corner Hoe, The General Store, The Old Mantel, the T Turtle, Toms' Rugs and Furnure, Amerin At Heart, Tla's Junktiqu, and "Darw's Etc. Antiqu" had opened their doors Sellwood — and ctomers arrived drov lookg for that perfect special em or a plementary piece to plete the terr of their hoe or garn. </p><p> Antique stor had proliferated so fast along 13th Avenue that the owners realized they need some sort of marketg logo and name, to intify the area to potential buyers. The tag le "Sellwood Antique Row" was chosen — and buyers lookg through the newspaper advertisements, tra magaz, and even talkg wh others to fd for a new place to shop, now add Sellwood's Antique Row to their list. </p><p> Populary had arrived so quickly that wh jt a few years Antique Row Sellwood boasted more than 30 antique alers and specialty stor. Christmas was a special time, wh the merchants ratg their stor, stayg open longer hours, and Christmas Carolers strolled the siwalks as micians joed to play Holiday favor. And seemed that, at Christmas time, every store offered ffee and goodi for ctomers to enjoy. </p><a href=" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"></a><a name="Advertisg_3"></a><p><img src=" alt=" width="415" height="600"/> Artist At Meyers, owner of "At's Place" Sellwood, was asked to sign and create a banner that uld be placed the store wdows along each block to signate the area "Old Sellwood". He me up wh a lorful sign of a sg sun wh a face, which uld be seen wdows along the twelve blocks om Lambert to Clatsop. </p><p> The prence of Antique Row may have been what drew Bob and Llie Goldsmh to buy the hoe of Dr. Bartholomew Sellwood 1974 -- but they certaly found the neighborhood to be the perfect place to raise a fay. On the weekends, Llie began to dabble antiqu herself, purchasg merchandise at tate sal and flea markets, and then rellg them om her livg room durg the week, while she took re of the uple's two children. </p><p> The prev owner, Dr. Bartholomew, had operated his optometrist and oculist bs out of a small stcture on the ont of the property. Apparently believg that he had sold only his property — but not his bs — to the Goldsmhs, the good doctor to their surprise ntued makg appotments and servg patients om the small doctor's office their ont yard. </p><p> It took a lot of persuasn on Llie's part to eventually nvce the good doctor that he had sold his property cludg his appotment room, and eventually he left — but, for the next few years, the Goldsmhs had to ntend wh sistent ctomers who vised what was now lled "Den of Antiquy" to get an eye exam, or to mand that Llie fix their glass. </p><p> The "Den of Antiquy" was so succsful that the uple themselv cid to add a storeont onto the ont of their hoe. For the next thirty years the Goldsmhs would be among the few antique alers who survived and prospered on 13th Avenue after the peak of the antiqu mand there me and went. But they weren't the only on. </p><p> When he beme exasperated as an art teacher The Dall, Darw Otto left his posn tn and cid to put his artistic skills to work, alg wh antiqu and home dér. He began settg up tate sal for people who were too overwhelmed to want to price and list their ems the lol newspapers. And, wasn't long before Darw moved to Portland and opened his own Specialty Shop, "Etc. Antiqu", at the rner of S.E. 13th Avenue and Lexgton. This small, box shaped one-story store, wh two large display wdows and a nopy awng, was built around 1906 — which Fah Henrson opened her "Bonte Shop". It stayed a Millery Shop for the next fifteen years, n by Martha Richards — next known as the "Bonnie Millery Shop" -- until the late 1920's. A succsn of bety salons occupied the space the followg years until the 1930s, when beme Rhoads Fur Storage for thirteen years. </p><p> Darw occupied the Fur Storage stcture and opened his shop "Etc. Antiqu" 1972, petg wh all the other antique alers loted along 13th Avenue. Unlike other tradnal stor sellg heirlooms and revalized treasur, Darw began stagg and tegorizg his war so that buyers had a sense of what to buy, and where their purchase might go their hom. Ctomers enterg most antique shops the 1960s and 70s were overwhelmed wh goodi and furnure stacked on top of each other, while glass display s were filled to the brim wh jewelry, ps, fabrics, and mantel piec. It was fely a hunt and search game for voted buyers on the lookout for specific ems. </p><p> Often Darw would rate his store as he would the hoe he lived . It was to there that Darw moved his Antique Store. </p><p></p><p> After he moved to his hoe on Clatsop Street, -owners Pat Jaffuel and Marcee Melton operated their "Unique Antique Shop" Darw's former lotn for the next thirteen years. </p><p> Marcee ncentrated on makg and sellg old merntile goods, jt like the prev proprietors did a century earlier — when Bonte Millery occupied the space. And Pat happily retired om his early morng "4 a.m. to noon" shift as a lumber broker, and joed Marcee showsg their vtage goods to potential buyers. </p><p> Longtime Wtmoreland rint Donna Merseth, who worked part time at a few of the antique shops Sellwood, remembers one owner — Ann O'Keefe — as one of the most energetic and vivac people she's met. At one time, her store, "The Found Object", was suated a two-story craftsman hoe across the street om SMILE Statn. "Ann took old foundry piec and glass, and ma them to unique ffee tabl or betiful wall piec," rells Donna. . </p><p> Usg the art gree she received om the Universy of Washgton, Ann searched the untry high and low, lookg for odd piec on which to put her art talents to work. As Donna remarks, "She was the only person I knew who uld turn a woon crate to a work of art that was sought after by many of her ctomers." </p><p> Much like a scene out of a Nancy Drew mystery book, Donna explaed that one time the pair spent the better part of the day stumblg around the hay loft of a farmer's barn lookg for woon crat to take back to Ann's art stud. "After we llected a rload of berry crat, we found they were filled wh straw and owl droppgs, so we took them down to the outdoor r wash on 17th and S.E. Taa and washed them down." The next day, Ann was exhilarated and told her -worker that she had been too exced to go to sleep, and spent much of the night creatg a new sign for her berry crat. </p><p> In the 1980s, Sellwood's Antique Row remaed popular; new vendors and new store nam replaced the pneers of Thirteenth Avenue who were ready for retirement and were willg to pass the res to somebody younger. Banners, brown signs givg the history of buildgs, and a day-long street ftival entled "Celebrate Sellwood Days", were many of the ias by shopkeepers and the Sellwood Antiqu Dealers Associatn tend to draw ctomers to their shops. </p><p> Promotnal activi by the antique alers through the years clud panke breakfasts, flea markets, siwalk sal, puppeteers, children's theater performanc, and sgers, as well as tomotive ocsns which visors uld view old jalopi and mcle rs parked along the street. Pat Young, and his partner Gayle Ryan, offered young buyers everythg om ic books and baseball rds to advertisg mementos like Co Cola glass, Roy Rogers wboy outfs, and Jam Bond spy toys — while the olr shoppers were on the lookout for prsn glass, groovy lampshas, and handma old-fashned siboards. Antique Malls have largely replaced dividual antique stor. </p><p> Gayle Tweed, Darw Otto, and Brent Heeb started the first such mall Wtmoreland — "Stars Antiqu Malls" on Milwkie Avenue, 1990, soon followed by their send store, Splendid Antiqu Mall. </p><p> Some may wonr, after so many years, why Brent Heeb still matas his by schle at Stars Antiqu — but, as he is quick to reply, "I have a grandfather who loved to shop for rpets, and I spent a lot of time wh him.
