Performer Gladys Bentley epomized this style wh her men’s hats, ti and jackets. Women same-sex relatnships at this time didn’t <em>yet</em> e the word “lbian” to scribe themselv.</p><p>Prison slang troduced the terms “daddy,” “hband,” and “top sargeant” to the workg class lbian subculture of the 1930s.</p><p>Pants beme a distctive queer style the 1940s, wh hundreds of thoands of women donng utilarian clothg to work factori bee of the war. And wh migratn to the ci, bars that specifilly ter to the women n thrive. It’s at this time that “butch” materialized as an unrground term ed by workg-class women, as well as gay men to scribe masculy their own muni.</p><p>But, more than “mascule lbian,” what is the fn of “butch”? <a href=">Wrers have qutned</a> what mak a butch woman particular: Is her style, what she do bed, or who she’s attracted to? And do <em>she</em> have to intify as a butch to <em>be</em> a butch?</p><p>Lookg back on this era, scholar <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Gayle Rub wrote</a> that “‘butch’ intify primarily as mascule or prefer mascule signals, personal appearance, and styl.” This inty thrived nightlife. “<a href=">Are you butch or femme</a>?” was a qutn that the Lbian Herstory Archiv founr Joan Ntle rells beg asked as soon as she would walk to a bar. They were phed to the margs.</p><p>It didn’t stay that way for long. “Butch” and “femme” ma a eback the 1980s as sexually empowerg terms, and not jt for workg class women. There were “butch bottoms” and “femme tops” who ed the terms for their own pleasure.</p><p>In the <a href=">ballroom scene</a>, queer people of lor ed the term tegori that measured masculy, like “butch realns” or “butch queen.”</p><p>Tony Khner’s landmark 1991 play about the years, <em>Angels In Ameri</em>, dubbed Joe Pt — a closeted gay “Marlboro man” — a “mega-butch,” ntrast to the play’s femme protagonists. While butch among gay men are often seen as sirable, they were also viewed wh spicn as hidg their gay inti.</p><p>A landmark novel for butch lbian reprentatn was Llie Feberg’s <em>Stone Butch Blu</em>, published 1993, about a workg-class butch lbian who of age bars, fac homophobic vlence, and explor the terrory between butch and trans inty.</p><p>The “stone butch” was an epome of the butch inty; a lbian who did not let her partner touch her sexually.</p><p>Butch lbians <em>and</em> trans folks alike saw a reflectn of themselv Feberg’s work. Butch has been nnected to trans inti, and some who intified as butch women went on to intify as trans men or transmascule.</p><p>That same year, butch visibily got even lour when butch sger k.d. lang was on the ver of Vany Fair, gettg a shave by Cdy Crawford. “Dyk To Watch Out For,” “The Drag Kg Book,” and other publitns created a culture where there is fally “proof” of butch.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>The 2000s ma way for more mastream butch visibily.
