GAY BORX
* lgbt centre lyon *
I loved my fay and my fay loved me but was a very difficult place to be gay, to be different any way. I mentn my background bee by the time I went to London as a stunt, I already knew that I was gay, although we didn’t e that word then, and I was sexually active the first few years I was London.
There was no sense which my gayns was nied London the late 1960s; was supposed to be swgg London, there was supposed to be a new attu towards sexualy. There was certaly a greater willgns to discs sexualy after the law was liberalised 1967 ((The Sexual Offenc Act crimalised homosexual acts private between male dividuals. When the Gay Liberatn Front started October 1970 at the London School of Enomics, where I had started workg, was a transformative moment for me.
It’s not simply bee I met new people, but bee of the particular elements of what Gay Liberatn Front was at that moment. It was obvly fluenced by the Gay Liberatn movement the Uned Stat, post-Stonewall, but also had many Brish characteristics.
GAY FRANCE
We saw ourselv, for the first time, as an opprsed mory; we saw our inty as somethg we need to affirm, somethg we need to be proud of – “Gay is good” – and we saw ourselv as part of a much larger polil movement, fluenced by femism, black liberatn and civil rights movement. That heady batn ma the Gay Liberatn Front, for a very brief perd, a sort of magil experience.
In those early years I beme an openly gay activist, and that was central to my life, but I also beme a wrer. I stggled the early days to wre some gay journalism – was unfaiar to me – but eventually, over the next four or five years, I began wrg books, and I’m aaid I never stopped. I hope that I was able to brg to bear the strengths of more tradnal scholarship wrg about gay and lbian history and wir sexual history and that I was able to ntribute to a transformatn of the way we see sexualy society – not as a private thg, which historians shouldn’t be bothered wh – but actually as somethg that was mould society, shaped history, changed by stggl and forms of ristance, forms of posive intifitn and posive affirmatn of our sexuali, and ed our different genrs.
