REVIEW: MOUNT GAY BLACK BARREL RUM AND XO RUM (2020)

The pany produc a variety of ms, cludg Mount Gay Eclipse, Mount Gay Extra Old, Mount Gay XO, and Mount Gay Black Barrel. Mount Gay m has won numero awards over the years, cludg the prtig Grand Prix d'Honnr at the Internatnal Rum Conference.

The Mount Gay Rum Estate ss atop a ridge to the north of Barbados. The Mount Gay tate was hered 1747 by his son, the ironilly named, Jam Sober.

Acrdgly, Cumberbatch appoted his iend, Sir John Gay Alleyne, to ntrol the tate. Sir John died 1801 and Cumberbatch named the tate, Mount Gay, his memory.

MOUNT GAY XO TRIPLE CASK BLEND RUM

For those the know Mount Gay Extra Old is often known as MGXO. The XO notatn on the Mount Gay is pretty standard across the m and spirs dtry to note an aged spir (whout actually notg how old is!

MOUNT GAY XO RERVE CASK RUM

As the Mount Gay Distillery is the olst official distillery the world tablished 1703 as the label not, I don’t thk we need to worry too much about the herage and thenticy of the ntents of this Extra Old m.

The master blenr at Mount Gay is the shape of Allen Smh who has been wh the distillery over 20 years. Mount Gay have recently re-brand their bottl and troduced a few new l the shape of Black Barrel and a few limed edn sk fish edns have also appeared. The new prentatn of the Mount Gay Extra Old Cask Rerve Rum is keepg wh the Eclipse (Mount Gay’s entry level offergs).

Like the Eclipse the MGXO has Mount Gay Distilleri etched to the glass of the bottle, as pictured. In light of my imprsns wh this m I have also cid to revist Mount Gay Eclipse.

MOUNT GAY XO (EXTRA OLD) RUM – REVIEW

Of the three ms I found Mount Gay to be the middle terms of u aroma’s.

MOUNT GAY EXTRA OLD XO

Tastewise I found the Mount Gay to be very nice and que easy gog spe the 43% ABV. In terms of prentatn is a two horse race between Seale’s odd ball offerg and Mount Gay’s more ntemporary approach.

Mount Gay’s Black Barrel and XO Rum exprsns have both been around for some time — Black Barrel is the newbie, released origally 2013; XO was rebrand om s origal “Extra Old” some time around then too — but 2020 the Barbados-based distillery revamped both of the venerable bottlgs. (The were unveiled at an event lled the Mount Gay Brand Ret — signed to “embrace transparency wh an -pth look to the brand and s premium liquids.

Mount Gay Black Barrel is an all-new blend which “featur an olr selectn of ms, movg to a blend of three to seven-year-old ms as opposed to the prev two to seven years, wh a higher ntent of double distilled pot still ms. Mount Gay XO has been “enriched wh a broar palette of ms selected, dividually aged three different sks – Amerin Whiskey, Bourbon and Cognac – for five to 17 years, rather than the prev eight to 15 years. Let’s taste (cludg a parison agast a 2008 vtage bottle of Mount Gay Extra Old).

MOUNT GAY TRIPLE CASK BLEND X.O. RUM

Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum (2020) – I’ve no olr bottlg of this for parison, alas, but based on memory and my old tastg not, the soul of Black Barrel hasn’t changed. Mount Gay XO Rum (2020) – While there’s olr stock the blend now, I thk the key thg to note is that the old Extra Old started at 8 years old, while the new XO starts at a mere 5. Contrasted wh the rich not of ffee, cholate, and tobac found my 2008 vtage bottlg of Mount Gay Extra Old, and there’s really no parison.

MOUNT GAY XO RUM

Although the new XO has the characteristic Mount Gay, unsweetened m flavor of the old XO, this new versn has no punch and the flavor sort of di on the palate rather than lger. It's like the Mount Gay Eclipse, but not available Morrisons and so much better.

Top qualy, tasty drk, as one would expect om Mount Gay.

However, after havg ntacted Mount Gay’s ctomer service ( France, bee Rémy Cotre has owned the brand sce 1989), I n now tell you that both blends are exactly the same – a batn of 8-15 year old ms – and the bottle on the right is merely a newer, more “premium” sign, which is le wh my observatn that ms are now movg upsle both blendg and sign (see the Elements 8 review if you doubt me). Mount Gay is the m om Barbados that sentially – after tourism, I gus – mak the island’s name. Nicholas Abbey, and though Cockspur is pretty faiar to any Wt Indian (’s had sniggerg rights for s) ’s not so well known outsi the Islands: but you’d be hard prsed to fd someone who hasn’t at least heard of Mount Gay.

GAY STRASBOURG

The olst ntuoly operatg mercial distillery the wtern hemisphere is not Stland, ’s not the Amerin ntents – is this one, and has the papers to prove : fact, legend has that Mount Gay was distillg m sce the mid 1600s, which would brg a sha behd Bhls, Ireland (so look up).

9 THGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT MOUNT GAY RUM

The signature of their l is banana and almond, the way cs is for Appleton, and the premium offerg is the Mount Gay 1703 Old Cask: what we had for the July 2010 selectn was a few ngs lower – the Extra Old, a mixture of ms eight to fifteen years old (a note here: the kd of the bottle I review is the picture on he left: this is gradually beg replaced wh the sleeker new sign on the right). Extra Old m of any kd has this chet of age and re and love about – onle reviews are almost uniformly posive and fawn over the m as if uld hold them till the Rapture – and while I had wanted to stroke Mount Gay like a favoure t, you’d thk my prr enunters wh other pretently named XOs would have ted me out of this ln: as turned out, I had fotten my lson, and simply got scratched for my trouble. I thk one day I’ll fork out three figur for the 1703 Cask edn om Mount Gay, if some kd purchasg agent for a liquor shop ever gets around to brgg over to this cy of malts: by that time, I’m jt hopg that I’ll have put this rather disappotg experience behd me, so I don’t treat the premium offerg of a four hundred year old distillery wh the same sort of difference that this slightly ls exalted bottle treated me.

MOUNT GAY EXTRA OLD RUM REVIEW

But a 2017 revis, wh more experience (and perhaps more unrstandg), I lled the Mount Gay XO one of the Key Rums of the World.

In 2017 Mount Gay released a sk strength exprsn of the XO, which I felt was que good when I tried 2018. It remas to be seen what rponse will be mounted by Mount Gay.
