He rpond about 10 hours later, apologizg for the lay and explag he’d <a href=">spent the day wh the Jonas Brothers</a>.</p><p class="">Look, I’m not tryg to suggt that every day as a natnal sports lumnist is glamoro and excg. I’m jt sayg that when someone brgs up the atmosphere at last summer’s Women’s World Cup, Jason’s the guy who says, “<a href=">I was there</a>.”</p><p class="">He joed earlier this week.</p><p class=""><strong>KG: So I do image that, before the COVID-19 panmic, your average workday started wh, I don't know, kickg your feet up on the sk, llg your good buddy Roger Ferer and chattg about the bt maron shop near Roland-Garros. Have I got that about right?</strong></p><p class="">JG: You know, other than the fact that Roger would be stg there right wh me, and we'd be havg that bate person, that's exactly, exactly what my life was like — as if you had a surveillance mera there.</p><p class=""><strong>KG: How do your days start now?</strong></p><p class="">JG: Listen, everybody's life has been upend. And nobody wants to hear om some sort of pampered sports wrer about their stggl durg this, you know, ser suatn.</p><p class="">But the tth of the matter is that there's never been more happeng. Everythg is impacted, and the cisns that are beg ma now are gog to have credible repercsns for not jt the g year, but perhaps for the future of sports overall. I thk the way that we played gam and certaly the way that we attend gam is gog to change radilly the short term and, perhaps, signifintly over the long term.</p><p class="">You know, when this started to unfold, a lot of my iends sort of looked at me like I, you know, owned a Betamax supply store and said, "Woah, man. I don't know what <em>you're</em> gog to do." But there's a lot gog on.</p><blockquote class="article-pullquote breakout"><p class="article-pullquote-text">"Sports wrg for me is no longer a day job. ... I am a loy school teacher."</p><ce class="article-pullquote-attributn">Jason Gay</ce></blockquote><p class=""><strong>KG: So, the meantime, you've kd of taken on a send job, right? </strong></p><p class="">JG: Y, y. Well, the tth of the matter is that sports wrg for me is no longer a day job. It is somethg that happens the funny hours — you know, the darkns of the morng wh the ltle birdi chirpg or late at night after my fay has gone to bed. I am a school teacher, Karen. And this will not shock you to learn that I am a loy school teacher.</p><p class="">I have a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old at home. And, you know, that might seem like not exactly heavy amic material but, Karen, 's been s sce I've done phonics.</p><p class="">My poor children are saddled wh ar old, dummy dad — who barely knows his way around an iPad — tryg to get them through this virtual school experience.</p><p class=""><strong>KG: You have been surround by teachers your entire life. Both of your parents were teachers. Your wife is a teacher. I mean, you mt have picked up some tips over the s?</strong></p><p class="">JG: You know, my parents ma stctn about teachg when I was a child was, "Don't bee a teacher." And the fact of the matter is that I thk teachers are miracl. I thk a lot of have learned this over the past four to six weeks. They're miracl terms of jt the abily to not jt teach, but to fort, nsole, to build muny. I mean, I see up close and personal wh my wife terms of, you know, the amount of effort that go to makg that school day happen. That's happeng at night, that's happeng on weekends, that's happeng the early morngs.</p><p class="">This notn that somehow they're jt, like, transferrg the school hoe over to the iPad and — that's jt absurd. I don't thk teachers have ever worked harr. So terms of, "Did I pick up anythg along the way om my parents?" I mean, I thk they were jt better people than I was, Karen. So that's why I beme a sports wrer.</p><p class=""><strong>KG: All right, so as a substute teacher, how do you fe a succsful school day at this pot? </strong></p><p class="">JG: No vlence, I thk is the first thg. I thk that if we get to, let's say, a solid, you know, 65% of the assigned material, I feel good about that. You know, look: sports if you're wng 60% of your gam, you're a playoff ntenr. So I'm takg the same approach.</p><p class=""><strong>KG: Well, have you thought about addg any extra, like, PE uns? I mean, that's a subject matter you should be knowledgeable about.</strong></p><p class="">JG: Y. Well, listen: what I do is I wake up the morng and say, "Oh, today's PE: You need to n around the buildg 750 tim and jt get me a uple hours."</p><p class="">You know, I know people like to goof about, like, what gym class requirements are, and so on. But to be ser here for a mute: when we nsir the mental ponent of this and the physil-mental nnectn — that's as important an assignment as there possibly is.</p><p class=""><strong>KG: And, jt to stay ser for jt a mute, bee we've been jokg a lot about how your kids are stuck wh you as a teacher, but realy they've got pretty good. </strong></p><p class="">JG: And that's an important, important pot — perhaps <em>the</em> most important pot to make this is the fortune that we have to be wh a school that is givg stunts the tools and to have the technologil accs, bee far, far too many children, Karen, are not given [those] kds of support systems.</p><p class="">And, many ways, 's sort of mirrorg the stcture and the imbalanc that were already there, but we're seeg sharper relief. You know, I won't lie. There have been a few moments where I have looked at that iPad and said to myself, 'I know the answer to 10 m 5.' But, you know, I jt figure one day you're cheatg on your kids' virtual homework. The next day you're hirg a landspe archect to build their volno fourth gra. And then, a bunch of years later, you're photoshoppg a kid's head on top of a rower's body and tryg to sneak them to llege, gettg raid by the FBI and wdg up the slammer. So I'm not gog there, Karen. So if you n relay: we are stickg to the l. I am a man of tegry, Karen.</p><p class=""><strong>KG: Thanks, Jason.
