Then-owner Ed Hermance told the Inquirer they benefed om a gay “rmatn revolutn” — a sh of lerature published about LGBTQ life all at once. In 1987, when Jam Baldw vised Gvanni’s Room — Philalphia’s gay and femist bookstore that took s name om his semal novel — was a hasty affair.

In the mid ‘70s, as the activist group Gay Rairs stormed broadst news programs to crease natnal LGBT visibily, lol visibily improved apace. As the world weled the 1980s, Gvanni’s Room weled s first sal to overseas bookstor, among them Gay’s The Word London, Prz Eisenherz Berl, and L Mots a la Bouche Paris. The owners and staff at Gvanni’s Room, like those at Gay’s the Word, unrstood and appreciated the impact their bs had on the lol LGBT muny.
The store also saw the loss of several of s employe and volunteers to AIDS, cludg Black gay wrer and activist Joe Beam, who had worked at Gvanni’s Room for six years before his ath 1988, and -founr Bernie Boyle, who had been the one to first troduce Hermance to the store, 1992.
