There are few chanc that s managers dare to take, and the dividual talents of s directors and actors are submerged the undifferentiated sludge of s puterized spectacle.</p><p class="paywall">“Thor: Love and Thunr,” directed by Taika Wai, is far om the worst of Marvel’s big-screen offergs. It’s brisk, amiable, and straightforward. Its evably heartstrgs-tuggg relatnships and s sanctimon sense of purpose are leavened wh the puckish spir of Saturday-morng rtoons, if not their playfulns. And there’s a rehg simplicy and clary to the story. (The script was wrten by Wai and Jennifer Kayt Robson.) But the film pass through the nervo system whout liverg any stenance or even leavg a ridue.</p><p class="paywall">The villa is a character lled Gorr, whose young dghter di his arms as they wanr the sert fealty to the god Rapu. The grief-stricken father then enunters Rapu (Jonny Bgh), who celly mocks Gorr’s expectatn of rewards the afterlife. Gorr strik Rapu down wh a handy superweapon, the so-lled Necrosword, and vows to follow up this first killg wh a celtial reign of terror to extermate the gods—and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is next. Thor liv his renstcted home town of New Asgard. (The origal was stroyed the 2017 film “<a href=">Thor: Ragnarok</a>.”) His ex, the astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), is revealed to have termal ncer; chemo isn’t workg, so she go to New Asgard the hope that the magic of Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, will heal her. Jt then, Gorr attacks New Asgard, unleashg giant spiry reptil to kidnap the town’s children orr to lure Thor to his lair. Both Jane and the New Asgard rint Valkyrie (Tsa Thompson), who now ns an ice-cream parlor, jos forc wh Thor and his quippy, rock-assembled sikick, K (Wai), to battle the villa.</p><p class="paywall">The melodramatic shadow of mortaly that domat the actn of “Thor: Love and Thunr” has no darkns—’s as bright-toned as the movie’s gltery C.G.I. Marvel removed the stg om ath when the characters that oblerated at the end of “<a href=">Avengers: Infy War</a>” returned for that movie’s sequel, “<a href=">Avengers: Endgame</a>.” But Wai, the director of the Holot romp “<a href=">Jojo Rabb</a>,” has reployed his manift talent for migatg horror. Then there’s Loki, the Asgardian god of mischief, played by Tom Hiddlton. Three queer characters. Crazy, right? It’s te. You jt have to know where to look.</p><p class="paywall">Let me expla. In the ics, Valkryie <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">kiss women</a>, and recently Thompson (the hero of <em>Thor: Ragnarok</em> on nearly every level) has nfirmed that she played her as a bisexual character. Meanwhile, an issue of <em>The Incredible Hulk</em> a few years back revealed that K’s “beloved” was the warrr Hiroim. When I asked Wai about his character’s sexual orientatn a few months ago, he said he didn’t thk of his character as gay when he played him, but “he uld be.” And while Loki hasn't had any romantic entanglements the Marvel movi and prents as a cisgenr man, the ics he's a <a href=">genr fluid character</a>. Are all of the characters explicly, obvly queer <em>Ragnarok</em>? No—except maybe Valkyrie—but that's not the pot.</p><p class="paywall">There has been talk for que some time about if and when Marvel would fally troduce an LGBTQ person to the cematic universe. Queer characters have been prent the ics for years; addn to folks like Valkyrie and K, the entirety of the X-Men anchise serv as a metaphor for the liv of LGBTQ people. And at a time when cln and reprentatn is at the foreont, every new blockbter that oms queer people—and women and people of lor—be more obv. Tony Stark and Pepper Potts’ relatnship has rulted , what, a uple of scen and a half-dozen l of dialogue? Thor’s breakup wh Jane Foster gets a sgle le <em>Ragnarok</em>. Time and distance have kept Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter and Bce Banner and Natasha Romanoff apart throughout many films. There’s Gamora and Peter Quill, but beyond that, a lot of the characters that populate the films don’t have any love liv at all—they uld all be gay and no one would even know. But bee Peter and Gamora are already a thg, there’s no reason Thor and Hulk uldn’t take their bromance to the next level, so that exce isn’t gog to hold out much longer.
