You’d have to look all the way back to the 1920s to fd our first unrground gay tablishments – which you n, via the Universy of Manoba’s. Manoba Gay/Lbian Archive’s Oral History Project.
One of Wnipeg’s first notable gay bars was Club 654, a members only after-hours club where liquor was not sold. Unlike notor “raids” at other gay clubs ci across Canada, there were no raids at Wnipeg’s gay bars.

This tolerance has been attributed to the work of people like, the Honourable Ruth Krdle, the now retired judge who was stmental advotg LGBTQ2 rights, cludg beg unsel for Wnipeg’s first gay club 1969. It was also durg this time that the Manoba Gay Coaln was tablished, which clud anizatns om the more ral muni of Thompson and Brandon.
This program, which featured openly gay people, was pretty much unheard of at the time.
Wnipeg’s first pri para took place on Sunday, Augt 2, 1987 on the heels of Manoba’s Human Rights Co -- which protected the rights of gays and lbians – beg past. It was a huge moment Wnipeg’s proud 2SLGBTQ+ history, one that may only have been eclipsed when Glen Murray – an openly gay man who had spoke to Manoba’s legislature before the passg of The Human Rights Co – was elected mayor 1998.
