The Tasmanian Mm and Art Gallery (TMAG) is thrilled to prent a major exhibn celebratg natnally rpected Tasmanian furnure maker, sculptor and artist, Gay Hawk: The Hoe of Longg shows Gay’s credible work, and regnis her mment to her practice as an artist and tor over 40 years, as well as her creative rilience the wake of the vastatg 2013 Dunalley is the latt TMAG’s seri of exhibns focg on livg Tasmanian artists, followg on om David Keelg: Stranger (2020-21), Julie Gough: Tense Past (2019), Patrick Hall: Thgs I Once Knew (2015) and Illumatn: The Art of Philip Wolfhagen (2013) is particularly well known for pneerg the e of found materials such as horizontal scb, driftwood, and shippg pallets her has been reprented by mercial galleri across Atralia, and her work has been clud major arts ftivals and acquired by natnal and state llectg stutns. Tragilly, Gay’s stud and home were stroyed the Dunalley bh fire January 2013, along wh her tools and an irreplaceable llectn of her life’s event has stctured the exhibn, which is loosely divid to galleri of works ma before and after the fire. Prcipal Curator of Art, Jane Stewart, said TMAG was pleased to be able to highlight Gay’s work, and her credible life story, The Hoe of Longg.

“TMAG has had a long associatn wh Gay, and holds several of her works s llectn, and so we are therefore lighted to prent her first solo exhibn an Atralian public gallery, ” Jane said.

“Gay is well-rpected as an artist lolly, natnally and ternatnally and while her work explor them such as history, polics, the environment and femism, at the same time is firmly rooted her Tasmanian life.

”TMAG’s Senr Curator of Derative Arts, Peter Hugh, said that The Hoe of Longg is signed as a sensive rponse both to Gay’s body of work over 40 years and also her experience of loss. “Sce the heartbreakg stctn of her hoe and stud the 2013 bhfire, Gay has been makg furnure for an imaged new home, ” Peter said. “We are so pleased to have been able to work wh Gay to renstct her ial home our galleri, and we hope that visors are jt as moved and spired by this Hoe of Longg.
