Set New Jersey, a state wh one of the hight percentag of Mlims the U.S., the show ptured the immigrant-Mlim Amerin world s specificy: the <em>wallah</em> bros wh their relig hypocrisi, the <em>masjid</em> uncl wh their hghty self-righteons. Brisk episos, each wh s own ternal plotle—one episo entirely voted to Ramy’s mother, another to his sister—stood on their own like neat vigt. At long last, here was a Mlim “Atlanta,” a “High Matenance” for New Jersey Mlims.</p><p class="paywall">If this feels like a low bar, that’s bee is. Outsi of untri where they are a majory, Mlims are often seen as the unmediatg executners of an abstract relign, as if their fah robs them of all other sir and nflicts. Onscreen, the characters are clumsy or flat—weak and piable (if they are women), od villas (if they are men). That is, of urse, unls they are secular Mlims—the kd beloved by liberal Amerins, who like to feel virtuo for havg “diversy” their iend groups. Ramy is not a secular Mlim. He subscrib to the same set of beliefs that have long ma Mlims such impregnable narrative characters. He actually believ God—“like, ‘God’ God, not yoga,” as he puts Season 1. Most of the narrative tensn om Ramy’s misguid attempts—and repeated failur—to live a life acrdance wh Mlim ials. Many of the ials, as we fd out the first season, are no longer upheld by his peers Egypt, where his father is om; and, yet, Ramy remas attached to them, at least aspiratnally. In practice, he masturbat nstantly. He blhely hooks up wh whe women, but expects pury om Mlim women. By the end of Season 2, he has had an affair wh his , wrecked his new marriage (to a virg) the very day began, and is tranged om his sheikh, who also happens to be his father--law, whom he’d grown very attached to. The season clos wh Ramy stg an abandoned r listeng to a CD about ablutn, the Mlim cleansg rual performed before prayer—a spirual gture of repentance.</p><p class="paywall">Season 3, which premièred on September 30th, isn’t much cheerier—at least not until the very end. But ’s also the season wh the cleart plotle and character velopment. At s worst, “Ramy” n feel like a disjoted sketch edy—a vsel for Yosef’s humoro observatns about urbane Mlim-immigrant culture. The third season, like s precsors, sometim reli on gracels provotns that never mature a way that advanc the story. As he explas, “I nnot jerk off to my own mother.” (The episo appeared to be lampoong a ntroversial fatwa that was issued by a lecturer at Egypt’s most prtig relig universy, Al-Azhar, 2007, which suggted that male and female work lleagu uld e breast-feedg to get around a relig ban on beg alone together—but, ultimately, the joke don’t land.) This season, we get Hadid playg Lena, a turtleneck-wearg, “The Office”-obssed love tert of Ramy’s iend Steve (Steve Way), a man who has mcular dystrophy. But the sheikh is unbothered. “So, ’s a hundred grand for a promo post,” he tells Ramy. “Or we n do a seventy-thirty spl on any sal directly lked to my Instagram.” After the sheikh brandish the “ice” and plugs Ramy’s brand on mera, the two men live-stream themselv prayg together. It’s Mlim sponn.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">But even the most astute of the pop-cultural mgs n feel somewhat faiar three seasons , and so “Ramy” has ma a clever cisn to foc on character exploratn this time around. As a rult, we get some dark plotl, such as when Ramy’s uncle Naseem (Lah Nakli), a closeted gay man, nearly los his md at the thought that he’d been outed by a younger man he’s been seeg, who turns out to be iends wh Ramy’s sister Dena (May Calamawy). And I am, too.”</p><p class="paywall">Ramy is not the only character to go to therapy this season; his sister Dena and his mother, Maysa (Hiam Abbass), attend unsellg ssns as well, both wh the same whe therapist, played by Amy Lancker. When Dena opens up about losg her virgy, the therapist repli wh a sweepg generalizatn, askg if Dena agre that brown cultur have an emotnal relatnship to food. Later, when Dena brgs her mother to group therapy—and after Maysa, havg had enough, storms out—the therapist asks two other patients the group to role-play as Dena’s mother and father. The reënactment quickly volv to crass stereotyp: the woman playg Maysa puts on an Indian accent, and the father dials his patriarchal assumptns up to eleven. In the background, we hear the therapist enuragg them: “Nice, nice.”</p><p class="paywall">Three years ago, when I reviewed <a href=">the first season</a> of “Ramy,” I wrote that was likely to anger some Mlims, bee expos the kds of unfortable tths to which they are tempted to turn a bld eye: the sons and dghters who might be allowg themselv more liberti than their parents wish to know, the closeted liv that iends nnot bear to broach wh each other. Season 3 ups the ante by examg the bnt of this secrecy, awkwardns, and shame. On Amerin TV, the season n feel like an open-air therapy ssn ont of a wir, ignorant dience—a reflectn on the challeng of self-examatn unr the whe gaze.
