It wasn’t until the 1970s that Davie Street’s gay village beme visible, but the history of queer muni ncentratg the Wt End go back to at least the 1940s, says Ron Dutton, archivist and founr of the B. Gay and Lbian Archiv. The new generatn of Wt End dwellers clud a high percentage of young gay men who me om across Canada, attracted to the Wt End’s lotn, affordabily and the anonymy of high-nsy livg.
“And yet, wh that, gay people found safe spac below the radar – whether was an illegal boozen or a hoe party – plac where they uld be themselv wh one another before beme visible.

In 1969, homosexualy was crimalized and 1971, the first monstratn by the Gay Alliance Towards Equaly took place at the Vanuver urthoe. “It was really the 1970s, that the proportn of gay people the Wt End began to grow very rapidly, ” explas Dutton. Several stutns emerged that helped make the Davie Street Village a symbol of gay liberatn – the Gay Prs, a Gay muny centre and Ltle Sister’s Book and Art Emporium.

A vibrant and openly gay nightlife flourished, cludg the open-all-night Frgo Inn, the Gandydancer, the Shaggy Horse, Numbers and the Retal Circ (which beme Celebri). Today, Davie Village is no longer the only fortable space for the cy’s LGTBQ2+ muny; many have moved on to other parts of the Lower Maland, leadg some observers to predict that the “gaybourhood” will soon be a thg of the past.
“There are fewer gay bars than there once were, but they’re certaly full of people on a Saturday night, so clearly ’s fillg some kd of need, ” says Dutton. “There go the Gayborhood?

But as technology has improved and society’s acceptance of homosexualy has creased, the need for Davie Street as a muny hub has creased, he said. “You n pick up an app and figure out what gay people are wh feet, ” Steck said. “In that sense, I n see why the ‘gayborhood’ need is slowly, and sadly, dimishg.
