vaguely myster e-mails which journalists sometim get. It me om an acunt unr the name of “K. Lee,” generic enough to be un-Googleable. “I wasn’t sure to whom to send this msage,” the note began. “I am gay and teach at a member stutn of the Council for Christian Colleg and Universi.”</p><p class="paywall">That got my attentn. The uncil, known as the C.C.C.U., is Ameri’s most proment associatn of evangelil Prottant schools. A few weeks earlier, two schools had left the anizatn after announcg that they would start hirg married gay and lbian faculty, an unacceptable theologil posn for most member stutns. If this e-mail was really om a gay faculty member at a C.C.C.U. school, the senr’s inty would likely need to rema a secret. Otherwise, he or she would probably be fired.</p><p class="paywall">There wasn’t much more to the e-mail—a few lks, a story suggtn. I replied wh somethg quick and pole. Durg the next uple of years, I ntued to receive short msag om K., ually about the latt news Christian higher tn. Slowly, I started to learn more about my rrponnt. Her name was Kathy Lee. She tght polil science at Whworth Universy, a school wh around twenty-seven hundred stunts Spokane, Washgton. Now I uld look up her picture: she was her late fifti, wh short, silvery hair, and she wore rectangular glass and a chunky, lorful srf—the kd that baby-boomer liberal-arts profsors love.</p><p class="paywall">After a while, beme clear that Lee was thkg about g out. She began lookg to what legal protectns she had. “I had a very good meetg wh the attorneys Seattle,” she wrote September of 2017. “Mullg over their advice.” She was worried about losg her job. But she was also worried about puttg Whworth’s lears on the fensive and makg them feel like they had to double down on not hirg L.G.B.T.Q. faculty. Unlike some other Christian lleg, Whworth didn’t make s faculty sign a statement of fah wh cls affirmg that marriage is between one man and one woman. The stat quo was somethg closer to “Don’t ask, don’t tell”: universy admistrators assumed that there were lbian and gay faculty among their ranks, but they ma a pot not to quire to their employe’ sex liv. That lite balance might be dispted if a profsor me out, Lee thought. She mulled over the suatn some more.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">Two months later, Lee sent a letter to Beck Taylor, who was Whworth’s print at the time. “For many years, I have not talked about my sexual inty and let people sometim assume that I am straight,” she wrote. “I am not a profile urage.” But she was fally g out, Lee ntued, bee the lack of clary about who is and isn’t wele at Whworth “grds down” on her. “It sends the wrong and harmful msage to our stunts and lleagu, a msage nsistent wh our articulated valu.”</p><p class="paywall">Lee met wh Taylor. “While he was grac and kd,” she wrote an e-mail to me later, “ is gog to take longer for Whworth to be a pletely welg place than I thought.” Taylor assured her that she wasn’t gog to be fired, but afterward she sat her r and wrote down everythg she uld remember—that way, she and her lawyer would have a rerd. She felt dispired. “The ia of ‘borg om wh’ i.e., changg thgs om si, may not be worth the toll for me emotnally,” she wrote.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">That was all five years ago—the begng of Lee’s long and wdg procs of g out at Whworth. Sce then, siar stori have played out repeatedly on other Christian-llege mp. A group of stunts at Baylor Universy, Texas, lobbied to get an L.G.B.T.Q. support group regnized. A gay profsor at Milligan Universy, Tennsee, was reportedly forced to rign. Jt this month, protters gathered at Calv Universy, a school affiliated wh the Christian Reformed Church, Michigan, nouncg the Church’s cisn to reaffirm tradnal marriage.</p><p class="paywall">I spoke wh Christian-llege profsors who scribed the new standoffs as head-spng; seems like, even a ago, hardly anyone was talkg about L.G.B.T.Q. rights on their mp. Several people told me that they thk some C.C.C.U. schools are shiftg further to the right end of the polil spectm, polarized by the culture wars jt like every other stutn Amerin life. But Shirley Hoogstra, the print of the C.C.C.U., told me, “I don’t thk the mp are actually changg much.” It’s jt that “everythg that ed to be implic has to be ma explic.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">The theologil vibe of Lee’s Christian upbrgg was not hellfire and brimstone. “It was very quiet,” she said. “You acknowledge J as your Lord and Savur. And then you treated people well. It wasn’t plited.” She grew up Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, outsi of Ptsburgh, which is somethg of a Jesalem for Reformed Prbyterians. The nomatn ntrols Geneva College, a C.C.C.U. school the area, where Lee’s grandfather was the print and her father was an enomics profsor. Lee spent every Sunday at one of the small town’s four Reformed Prbyterian church, watchg her mother direct the choir. The church’s members were spl over whether was O.K. to watch televisn on Sunday, but Lee’s fay never missed a Steelers game. Her dad ed to lecture Sunday-school class on the virtu of not drkg or smokg, and his stralaced attu extend to all parts of life; he had a hab of flippg all the maroni box upsi down the grocery store to reveal, through the cellophane wdows on the ont, how shoppers were gettg ripped off.</p><p class="paywall">After graduatg om Wake Fort Universy, Lee went on to graduate school, for polil science, at Johns Hopks Universy. From the moment she arrived, she felt unsure of her place; seemed like everyone was talkg about books and thkers she had never heard of. She gravated toward the InterVarsy Christian Fellowship, a mp mistry group, bee was fortable; the nversatns and people felt faiar to those she’d enuntered back Beaver Falls. Lee formed a close relatnship wh one of the staffers there, a Che Amerin woman who loved food and lghed easily. When the woman left for a posn at another school, Lee realized was more than a iendship. She had a csh.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Lee tried to put the csh out of her md. But the issue seemed to chase her as she took her first assistant-profsor job at Whworth, 1984. One day, a favore stunt of hers, Jill Gill, me by durg Lee’s office hours. Gill nfid that, the prev summer, she had started a relatnship wh a fellow Whworth stunt—another woman. At Whworth, unmarried stunts weren’t supposed to be havg sex, perd; the ia of a sexual enunter between two women on mp was sndalo. “I crossed the precipice, and felt fantastic,” Gill told her. Lee absorbed the nfsn quietly, neher challengg nor affirmg .</p><p class="paywall">Over the next few years, Lee cycled through teachg jobs at different Christian lleg. She was practilly a poster child for the Christian higher tn: the early neteen-neti, while she was at Seattle Pacific Universy, a Free Methodist school, Lee wrote an advertorial <em>Christiany Today</em>, explag that “Creatn, the Fall, and Remptn form a backdrop agast which I teach polil science” and that helpg “stunts enunter God’s tth wherever may be found” was her job. In 1993, she took a posn at Eastern Universy, an Amerin Baptist stutn near Philalphia, where she was asked to sign a statement of fah affirmg basic tes of Christian doctre. The school would not hire openly gay faculty, but, by chance, Lee’s office was a hallway wh theatre and dance and English profsors—a r, artsy crew that was very supportive of gay rights. Their nversatns echoed the kd that hmen tend to have their dorm rooms at 1 <em class="small">A.M.</em>; they discsed the nature of tth and how to terpret the Bible. Out of cursy, Lee started readg the work of wrers who argued that homosexualy uld be patible wh Christiany. It was this muny—her iends, the wrers whom she admired—which helped her adm to herself that she was gay. She started a relatnship—her first ser one wh a woman. She was forty-five.</p><p class="paywall">Over all, Lee wasn’t happy at Eastern, which was relatively tradnal s polici; she had hoped for more formal L.G.B.T.Q. acceptance. When a polil-science job at Whworth opened up, 2011, Lee started askg iends who worked there whether would be a welg place for a gay profsor. One iend the office of stunt affairs, Dayna Coleman Jon, had a son who recently graduated om the universy; as a gay man, he’d had a terrible experience. Male stunts were aaid to shower the same bathroom wh him. A ltle group formed his dorm to pray for his repentance. One eveng, while he was ridg his bike a few blocks off mp, a few people pulled up a tck, lled him a “fag,” and beat him until he lost nscns. Coleman Jon had many tearful nversatns wh Bill Robson, Whworth’s print durg those years. “He was very sympathetic. I don’t know if he knew what to do wh the suatn,” she told me. (Robson cled to ment.)</p><p class="paywall">Still, Coleman Jon told Lee that she was feelg optimistic about Whworth’s future. The stunt body seemed to be growg more open and llg for more cln on mp. Other Christian lleg saw Whworth as “out there” and progrsive—there was talk that the school might potentially be the first the C.C.C.U. to change s hirg policy to clu openly L.G.B.T.Q. faculty and staff. Lee packed up and head wt to Spokane.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">For many people, the term “evangelil universy” probably lls to md the famo trag grounds of the old relig right—<a href=">Liberty Universy</a>, Virgia, or maybe Bob Jon Universy, South Carola. The schools are not the C.C.C.U.; most lleg the anizatn have a lower profile, although some are jt as theologilly and polilly nservative as Liberty. There’s also que a b of theologil diversy the C.C.C.U.; the two schools that left 2015 over L.G.B.T.Q. hirg, Goshen College and Eastern Mennone Universy, which are both Mennone stutns, whdrew to avoid creatg further divisn, out of a mment to their Church’s peacemakg tradn. In the Christian-llege firmament, Whworth is on the amilly rigoro end of the spectm, ranked as one of the top regnal schools the Pacific Northwt by <em>U.S. News & World Report</em>. Whworth is basilly a liberal-arts school where stunts are expected to engage serly wh the life of Christ.</p><p class="paywall">Whworth is clearly worried about gettg saddled wh culture-war baggage. On s Web se, the school markets self as “a different kd of evangelil universy.” By “evangelil,” “we don’t mean the socpolilly load term that n be intified wh a certa voter bloc,” Forrt Buckner, the Whworth mp pastor, says, a promotnal vio on the school’s YouTube channel. “We mean the historil e of the term: the good news that J Christ is Lord.” That throat-clearg might suggt anxiety about attacks om the left, but there are also ditns that the school is watchg s right flank. Dpe s historic ti to the Prbyterian Church (U.S.A.), a male nomatn that ordas L.G.B.T.Q. pastors and supports same-sex marriage, Whworth loosened s ti to the nomatn around the time that the P.C.U.S.A. was nsirg a more affirmg stance toward L.G.B.T.Q. people, the early twenty-tens.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Whworth’s lears often scribe the school’s missn by g the metaphor of “the narrow ridge.” (Robson, the former print, me up wh this, riffg on a ncept om the philosopher Mart Buber.) On one si of the ridge are secular stutns that don’t believe relig fah is a ser entry pot for scholarly quiry. On the other si are Christian schools that crack down on doctre, makg faculty and staff sign narrow statements of fah that don’t leave room for dividual discernment. Whworth tri to follow a path between those two extrem. But ’s no accint that this image evok the tree-ls exposure of a mounta’s ridgele, where travellers feel vulnerable to attacks om all around.</p><p class="paywall">For the most progrsive C.C.C.U. schools, ntendg wh L.G.B.T.Q. issu is a liabily. No matter what the schools do, they’ll leave some part of their nstuency feelg betrayed. One uld argue that Whworth’s cisn to leave the L.G.B.T.Q. issue unsettled—never actively welg gay or trans faculty, staff, and stunts, but also never adoptg a formal posn on sexualy and genr—is a way of walkg the narrow ridge, makg sure that there’s space for Christians the school’s muny to disagree good nscience. Meanwhile, every cisn has to be vetted for potential legal exposure—pecially fah-based hirg polici that might be nsted as discrimatn. L.G.B.T.Q. issu n easily get prrized as prints stggle to keep their schools afloat; many Christian schools have small endowments, high tun, and clg numbers of stunts to pay the bills. Whworth is no different. The school budgeted for six hundred first-year stunts the fall of 2022, but, so far, fewer than five hundred have enrolled.</p><p class="paywall">For some nservative schools the C.C.C.U., affirmg a tradnal stance on marriage and sexualy n be a strength—a signal to sktish Christian parents that they are matag their tradnal biblil mments. Hoogstra, the print of the C.C.C.U., gave another reason for the anizatn’s stance. Christian higher tn “is for fai and for stunts who would like to have the eedom to exame tth om all perspectiv— particular, tth om Scripture,” she told me. “When stutns believe that the Bible do not allow for timacy between same-sex people, is not an anti-L.G.B.T.Q. statement. It is a pro-tth statement.” Mark Yarhoe, the director of the Sexual and Genr Inty Instute at Wheaton College, a C.C.C.U. school, said, “From the outsi, you uld say, ‘Why are you behd? Why aren’t you where everyone else is?’ But I don’t thk that’s how those stutns thk about themselv.” He went on, “On the si, the qutn is: Is there a pellg reason to move away om historic Christian teachgs?”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">After Lee told Taylor, Whworth’s print at the time, that she was gay, she spent the sprg of 2018 quietly rmg her clost lleagu. “On Friday I me out to my partment and to the assoc vp for diversy and cln,” she wrote me an e-mail that Febary. “Thank goodns I had a happy hr schled!” Over another drk that same week, she me out to a high-level admistrator, who hted that L.G.B.T.Q. inty had bee a hirg issue; Lee later heard a mor that a top applint for a faculty posn wasn’t beg brought to mp for terviews bee he was openly gay. (Whworth cled to ment.) That year, stunts had chosen Lee to liver the mencement addrs. She was not out to her stunts. But, on an impulse, Lee shared her inty wh a graduatg senr who was also speakg at the ceremony. To Lee’s surprise, the stunt told her that she herself was bisexual, as was the other stunt speaker. “In hockey, as you probably know, there is the term, ‘hat trick,’ ed to refer to one player srg three goals one game,” Lee wrote me an e-mail. “The LGBT muny sred a ‘hat trick’ at mencement this sprg.”</p><p class="paywall">Even though Lee managed to mata a sense of humor about , g out was not like one of those movie montag of self-acceptance and empowerment. “Am feelg a b draed,” she wrote me the sprg of 2019, after she spoke to a iend’s polil-science class about beg gay on a Christian-llege mp. “When I got home, I jt kd of sat there.” A few months later, Lee troduced a iend’s Constutn Day lecture on L.G.B.T.Q. issu and talked a ltle about her inty. “I did wake up this morng, havg that feelg of ‘oh no what have I done,’ ” she e-mailed me the next day. She wanted to ph her muny, but she was also unsure of how public she uld be whout jeopardizg her job. One eveng, she went up to the microphone durg a public fom where provost ndidat were beg terviewed and asked a qutn about L.G.B.T.Q. cln on mp, mentng that she was part of that muny. Taylor was stg right ont of her. “He gets out a piece of paper, and he wr somethg on , and then he hands this paper to me. And I’m thkg, Oh, my gosh, what’s gog to say?” Lee told me. “And all said was, ‘You’re awome.’ ” She psed for a moment. “Did touch me? Y, did. Do I unrstand what exactly was beg munited? No, not really.” (Taylor cled to ment.)</p><p class="paywall">Lee was gog through a different kd of transformatn, too. Her Christian inty gradually beme “thner than was,” she told me. She qutned what she saw as the “arrogance” of Christian higher tn, premised on the ia that only Christians uld unrstand and impart tth to stunts. She ronated eply wh the Gospels and the story of J’ life—the were her templat for how to be the world. But she me to believe that strong ethil mments uld be rived om other sacred texts, too. She grew ambivalent about Heaven and doubtful about Hell; she gave up on the ia of penal-substutnary atonement, a central theologil prciple of the Reformed tradn, which holds that J died on the cross as penalty for humany’s ss. For some people at Whworth, Lee said, “I’m not sure what would be more disturbg: my sexual inty, or the fact that I haven’t been church regularly for eleven years.”</p><p class="paywall">One way to thk about Christian higher tn is as a venant, a set of bdg boundari that f each muny, wh which there is room to disagree, explore, and bate. At evangelil Christian universi, the price of entry is a willgns to orr your life acrdg to the Bible—to learn om s richns, and to subm even when chaf. At many Christian lleg, Lee would no longer f the venant—not bee she is gay but bee she is no longer what the schools would see as a Bible-believg, evangelil Christian. Acrdg to Hoogstra, many stutns would say that they’re fe wh havg unmarried gay faculty and staff members their muni. At Whworth particular, Lee’s sexual inty may not explicly vlate any policy, sce the school has liberately never taken a stand on homosexualy. And yet people Whworth’s muny clearly perceive a risk to beg out. To Lee’s knowledge, she is the first openly gay profsor the school’s history; she believ at least three or four other employe are closeted on mp.</p><p class="paywall">Every Christmas, Lee returns to Pennsylvania to fulfill a long-standg tradn: an eveng wh a few old iends om Eastern. They meet at a iend’s home, an old farmhoe, and their nversatns often go late to the night. One person who typilly is David Kg, the outgog print of a C.C.C.U. school where a beloved tenured profsor had to rign last fall after cidg to marry her female partner. Christian-llege lears often face an unrolvable tensn, beg lled to steward their stutn’s polici—and follow nomatnal guil—while also tryg to empathize wh their L.G.B.T.Q. iends and lleagu. Kg told me that Lee beme a metaphoril figure his head—someone he thought about all the time as he tried to figure out how his stutn should handle L.G.B.T.Q. issu, and who had ma the cisns feel personal, not jt abstract. “Our relatnship wh J—that don’t brg certaty. Otherwise, wouldn’t be lled fah,” he said. “I feel lled to wrtle wh this, bee I know Kathy Lee.” At the end of one of those Christmastime get-togethers, among the last before <em class="small">COVID</em> h, Kg pulled Lee asi. “I thk of you often, and I’m tryg to do this well, for you,” he told her. Reuntg this moment to me recently, over Zoom, Kg started chokg up and had to take a moment to gather his breath. “I also acknowledged to her that I feel as if I haven’t been able to do enough.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">No matter how much Lee has changed durg her four- reer, her prence is a fact. She is part of the Whworth muny. She is part of this world of Christian higher tn. Bee of her, other Christians “have to nont a way that’s different. They now actually know somebody. It’s not this theoretil issue,” Lee told me. “For me, g out at Whworth was important to let people know, yeah, there’s someone like this here.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">After years of tradg e-mails, Lee and I fally met over Zoom this sprg. She wore small hoop earrgs and a dark-gray hoodie wh the slogan “Love Conquers Hate.” A box of papers sat on the floor of her office next to a recyclg b and an air purifier; the bookshelv were dishevelled. She was the middle of packg up her thgs, gettg ready to leave Whworth for good.</p><p class="paywall">Last fall, Lee cid that she would retire at the end of the school year. The tensns over L.G.B.T.Q. issu were part of her cisn. But, mostly, she is retirg bee she n afford . In November, she bought a hoe on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, which has been stg empty. She’s hopg to do some advocy work retirement, and perhaps some oral-history projects. Datg Spokane never sued her much. “I found out very quickly that I don’t f the profile of a Pacific Northwt lbian,” she told me. (She hat backpackg, she’s allergic to ts, and she driv a Suba Forter only for the ground clearance durg snowy wters.) But, unexpectedly, she recently met someone on who liv Maryland. They’ve been rrpondg.</p><p class="paywall">It took a long time for Lee to agree to be featured a story. Although she was nervo about what might happen to her at Whworth, her biggt ncern was her mom. “For better or for worse, she red about what other people thought. And, our circle, this would have not been well received,” she told me, quietly. Lee adored her dad, the maroni-box flipper, and she believ that he would have accepted her if she’d e out to him. But she didn’t want to burn him wh a secret he uldn’t share wh his wife. Lee ma me promise I would never name her an article while her mom was alive. Now “I am ee,” she said. “And I’m also sad.”</p><p class="paywall">Lee is an unlikely standard-bearer for gay rights. She nfsed to me that she gets mixed up on the subject of pronouns, and she don’t feel like she has much guidance for queer stunts sce she was such a “late bloomer.” On our Zoom ll, Lee tend to fidget and lgh sheepishly whenever I asked her personal qutns. For someone so eloquent on big ias about Christian inty and L.G.B.T.Q. legal issu, she was surprisgly unfortable talkg about her own story.</p><p class="paywall">Gill, the stunt who me out Lee’s office the eighti, whom Lee has stayed touch wh, told me, “It was such a big thg for her to be ready to do that—to be fed up and be willg to force that stutn to al wh that issue through her.” Kathy isn’t the type to stage a s- a universy admistrator’s office. “She’s not an activist person,” Gill said. A few years ago, Gill and her partner took Lee to her very first Pri para Boise. In that cy, “by God, we have a lot to fight for,” Gill told me. Idaho still has charged polil bat over L.G.B.T.Q. rights; 2020, for example, beme the first state to ban transgenr girls and women om petg women’s sports. Gill said that the para “still has that old-fashned Stonewall sense to ”—the feelg that gatherg is polil and powerful. “Kathy lived hidg all the time at Whworth,” Gill said. “This is a chance for her to feel a muny out the streets—to touch them and see them.”</p><p class="paywall">The para was a small affair—maybe a few hundred people and a dozen floats. Gill told me that there were no pasti or assls chaps, like you might see at a Pri event New York Cy; the drs was closer to rabow-optnal. The whole thg was librated perfectly for Lee: a small act of celebratn a place where gay rights are still beg adjudited.
