In 1994 the sign of the rabow was adopted as the official symbol of gay pri. In 1993, the gural Queens Pri Para and Multicultural Ftival took place the historilly gay neighborhood of Jackson Heights and was the first such event to be anized a borough outsi the more gay-tolerant Manhattan. Co-anized by Daniel Dromm and Marza Martez, the para brought together a diverse group of LGBT people and alli om Queens and around the cy, and sought to promote pri, visibily, and acceptance followg years of homophobic hate crim and discrimatn.
After the openg of LaGuardia Airport, gay travelers and flight attendants waed out layovers by visg a small entertament district on 37th Avenue.

Begng the 1970s, Lato immigrants arrived Jackson Heights large numbers and, gradually, gay bars the area tered predomantly to LGBT Latos. Until the activism spurred on by the gay-biased murr of Jul Rivera July 1990, however, the LGBT muny of the neighborhood — and Queens general — was largely visible. The Queens Pri Para formed rponse to Rivera’s murr and, more directly, to the 1992 homophobic outcry over the cln of gay and lbian ntent the Children of the Rabow curriculum, which was signed to teach children tolerance of all of New York Cy’s diverse muni.
As a rult, former Cy Council Member Daniel Dromm, who was then a public school teacher the borough’s Communy School District 24 (where the ntroversy was centered), me out as openly gay and cid to unter the ensug propaganda wh a fay-iendly celebratory para that would promote LGBT visibily and pri, and be based a neighborhood where many closeted gay people lived.
