New York Beverage Control Board agents and NYC police officers raid the bar to enforce an alhol ntrol law that was seldom imposed anywhere else the on Gay tablishments, however, were mon at the time and were nducted regularly wh ltle or no ristance. Fearful Gay patrons were often physilly forced out of their gatherg plac, sometim beaten, and arrted, wh no jt e jt for simply this historic night, Lbians, Gay men and Drag Queens me together to fight back agast police harassment for the first time. The crowd si and outsi of the bar epted to vlent ristance agast the spread quickly about the nontatn and outraged crowds gathered on subsequent nights to prott the mistreatment historilly flicted on the Gay muny.
The protts me to be known as the Stonewall Rebelln, wh the uprisg servg as the talyst for the morn polil movement for Gay and Lbian, Gay and Lbian Pri events are planned annually each June throughout North Ameri to memorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebelln and to ntue the GLBT muny stggle for Origs of Motor Cy PriMotor Cy Pri trac s roots back to June 1972 when the first march was held downtown Detro to prott the homophobic laws and to work for regnn for LGBT Rights and Equaly.
GAY MUNICH
A party took place at the McGregor Center on the mp of Wayne State Universy followg the rally, anized by a small number of dited Gay and Lbian groups and 1989, the Gay and Lbian civil rights march was moved to the more central lotn of Lansg to attract statewi participatn and polil awarens as well as to celebrate the 20th anniversary of New York Cy’s Stonewall Rts, the begng of the morn day movement of equal rights for Lbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgenr cizens. Metropolan Detro was left whout a LGBT march, rally and party, so durg this same year, the first official Gay and Lbian Pri Ftival was found and chaired by Frank Colasonti, Jr. And sponsored by the Detro Area Gay/Lbian Council (DAGLC).
In June 1972, Detroers first fied societal norms and marched through the cy to advote for LGBT equaly and opposn of homophobic laws. It did not feel like any queer or gay bar that I have really ever been to.

“The homophobic arena of Detro has always been never really the spotlight. “You jt have never really seen that magnu of a gay bar [like Flamg Embers] htg such a bs area of Detro, ” she add.
“The issue was ternalized homophobia, ” Guzman said. It is also populated by many LGBTQ rints and has had two openly gay mayors. Café Me Royal Oak is gay-owned and operated.
