And they let them be this way bee, ep down, they are artists.</p><p data-no-id="16" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"Whout beg grandse, I dare to say sometim that the show self is about creativy," show creator Loren Bouchard says. "That's one of the them that's rmed the show sce the begng."</p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">That's how he wound up wh Bob. Bouchard had prevly worked on <em>Dr. Katz</em> and <em>Home Movi</em>, shows about people who try to be creative unr dangero circumstanc—as a therapist, or as an eight-year-old. Bob's no different. He is the most wildly amb burger shop owner there is.</p><p data-no-id="20" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"I wanted to tell the story of an artist, an unfulfilled creative guy who had to n this burger shop to re for this fay," Bouchard says. "And I say that he's unfulfilled, but a lot of ways he isn't anymore. In a lot of ways, bee of what he's built, he is fulfilled."</p><p data-no-id="22" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">He gets hours-long rivalri on tra trips, he subs for a home ec teacher, he gets his legs waxed wh Ta bee why? Bee of adventure. He thks the kids need adventure.</p><p data-no-id="24" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"Bob's a creative artist stuck a bs, and sce 's a fay bs, the kids are gog to be around. Bob and Lda, stead of takg out their boxed- creative dreams (Lda sgs, poorly but csantly) on their kids, jt let nsume the whole fay.</p><p data-no-id="32" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">H. Jon Benjam, who plays Bob (and also Archer of <em>Archer</em>, for those wh ble), says this is the enge of the show.</p><p data-no-id="34" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"They're shockgly optimistic about their suatn. They're really acceptg people. In a lot of the shows—and, I gus, this is reprentative, life—'s a lot of parents sayg, 'Well, we're really by. I don't have time to worry about my kids as much.' It's not like that this show. They're prent their kids' liv. It's really sweet."</p><p data-no-id="36" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">It is not enough for a joke to play on the stereotype of a character, like other shows. (Age will not be kd to <em>Big Bang Theory.</em>) It is not enough for a character to be a nerd, and for someone to ll that character a nerd and then wa for the lgh sign to light up, then for the nerd to rebut wh somethg equally broad and margalizg but worse. There is effort on this show that isn't anywhere else on televisn.</p><p data-no-id="38" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"The ascennce of Ta as a sort of in is proof," Benjam says. "It's not bee she's funny. She is, but that's not . She's hont and vulnerable and she's allowed to be who she wants to be, and she's funny wh that."</p><p data-no-id="40" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Benjam brgs up the hypothetil future episo which Gene fds out that he's gay, which would be a universe-levelg bombshell on any other TV show, but on <em>Bob's Burgers</em>? So what. Of urse Gene is gay, or isn't, or uld be, or might not be. Do matter?</p><p data-no-id="42" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"That's what's tertg about their fay: They're lettg their kids velop their own way," Benjam says. "It's more mon a lot of fai the world, but maybe not yet on TV. Bob's not one to micromanage his kids."</p><p data-no-id="44" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Not bumblg or crotchety or too enthiastic or too, well, <em>anythg</em>, Bob Belcher might be the least rtoonish TV dad we have. In spe of beg a rtoon.</p><p data-no-id="46" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"Gene, Ta, all of them—they'd tax up a parents' patience. But Bob is ls tged wh annoyance," Benjam says. "I thk he enjoys beg a dad."</p><p data-no-id="48" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"I know why there are the characters on TV who don't seem to like each other. People want the quick, setup-punchle jok. They drive the scen along very easily. But the disapprovg dad stuff— be a trap. It's a really unrstandable pfall," Bouchard adds.</p><p data-no-id="50" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">But the fay dynamics on <em>Bob's Burgers</em>?</p><p data-no-id="52" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"It's a ltle more earned. A ltle more fair."</p><p data-no-id="54" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">That's a good way to put , for <em>Bob's Burgers</em> and for the succsful 21st-century fay.
