Ebenezer Skiff, the first European to live the town of Gay Head, ma the gural lightg of the spir lamp si the tower�s lantern room on November 18, 1799. After a few years at Gay Head, Keeper Skiff felt he mered a pay crease and penned the followg letter to Albert Gallat, Secretary of the Treasury.

Early the neteenth century, the tower at Gay Head was lowered fourteen feet to rce the probabily of s light beg obscured fog. To be distguishable om fixed lights the area, the lightg apparat at Gay Head was a revolvg system of ten oil lamps each set a fourteen-ch reflector. In 1844, the tower was moved back om the edge of the erodg bluff about seventy-five feet, but the much-need new lighthoe and dwellg for Gay Head were not provid until after the formatn of the Lighthoe Board 1852. Jt as the untry started to ploy Frnel lens, $30, 000 for a new lighthoe featurg a first-orr lens was budgeted for Gay Head 1854. splendor equaled this trick of the magic lantern at Gay Head.

Charl Vanrhoop, an Aqunah Wampanoag, served as assistant keeper at Gay Head om 1913 to 1919 and then returned 1920 to take charge of the statn.

Keeper Vanrhoop�s assistant at Gay Head was Max Attaqu, also an Aqunah Wampanoag. On at least three ocsns, Vanrhoop and Attaqu helped fight fir at rinc the vicy of Gay Head Lighthoe. After the light was electrified, the first-orr Frnel lens was removed om Gay Head 1952 and placed a brick tower built on the grounds of the Martha�s Veyard Historil Society Mm Edgartown.

This has been taken on by the Town of Aqunah through the formatn of s “Save the Gay Head Lighthoe Commtee.
