But ’s fuckg gross out there? They should drk some water stead.</p><p class="paywall">Some porn played on the screen behd . Patti LaBelle sang om the speakers. This was a perfect space, and I orred more drks to take to my iends on the pat.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">All all, 2022 has been a ghoulish year for queer folks the Uned Stat. <a href=">Lawmakers have proposed</a> more than two hundred and fifty anti-L.G.B.T.Q. bills, more than a hundred and eighty of them directed at trans folks. Nearly half of book banngs this year have <a href=">focsed on queer ntent</a>. There have been more than a hundred and twenty <a href=">threats, protts, and</a> attacks <a href=">agast drag shows</a>. At least thirty-four trans folks <a href=">have been killed</a>, and stat across the untry have revelled <a href=">targetg trans kids</a>.</p><p class="paywall">But queer spac have been more sential than ever. They’ve served as fol pots of nnectn and as portals for sharg rmatn. Yet another year <a href=">to the panmic</a>, they’ve been plac to jt enjoy others for a fuckg mute. Or maybe play bgo. Or tch a drag show, or tch up wh iends, or sp the wheel on a date. They’ve offered a way to spend time wh people whom you n wear a ltle ls armor around, who might actually be vted your feelg O.K.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">In Febary, I flew to Los Angel to pretend to fish a novel, but mostly I end up drowng myself seolleongtang. The majory of the queer bars I hnted stood Silver Lake, sportg a ltle ls sheen than the WeHo circu farther down Santa Moni Boulevard. One night, I passed through the Eagle, where a Latx guy workg at the hotel I’d been stayg flagged me down by the pool table.</p><p class="paywall">He, too, was om Texas, but he’d recently reloted. He asked how thgs were back home, and I told him that they were suboptimal.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">It’s sad, he said. Bee there’s so much potential, you know? The numbers are there. My people are there. But what n you even do? A group of gays across the bar began to cheer for their iend, who had eher jt gotten married or divorced. Eventually, we joed , too.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">I thought of my new iend, September, when a church jt outsi Hoton hosted a drag bgo night <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">as a fund-raiser</a> for young trans folks, only to be scend upon by a group of <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">neo-Nazis and Proud Boys</a>. Protters and unter-protters clashed along a road leadg to the hoe of worship. Lol police formed a le on the median. Afterward, spe everythg, a pastor at the church emed the event a succs.</p><p class="paywall">At a queer bar that weekend, about thirty away, my boyiend, L, and I watched the ual assortment of karaoke sgers cross a stage. Spectatg was our ty rual. (I n nfintly sg only songs by BLACKPINK.) Some faiar fac were perched their rners. We sed and nodd and touched one another’s elbows and shoulrs. Eventually, a straight uple took the stage. They announced that they’d jt gotten engaged, and dited their performance to the queer folks attendance, swearg that “ gets better” before immediately lnchg to Selena’s mournful “No Me Queda Más.”</p><p class="paywall">Behd , someone asked, What the fuck?</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Back L.A. a few weeks later, I was stg wh two iends on the curb of Akbar, a gay cktail bar, when a r swerved toward our tersectn. A whe guy leaned out of his wdow, yellg, Go get fucked, faggots.</p><p class="paywall">The r honked as passed , nearly nng the light. The three of ntued to tap at our phon. Then one iend looked up, sighed, and said, Babe, I wish.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">The next month, after the fabulo llapse of a years-long project, I was feelg a ltle antic, and L suggted that we take advantage of remote work. We end up Bangkok for a month. Our hotel, the Silom area, sat a short walk om the subway le. A slightly longer walk brought to a strip of queer bars tucked down an alleyway, bi an all-night Amerin-style der whose tuna salad ma me see God.</p><p class="paywall">On our first night out, we met a bpectacled guy at a drag bar. He was a lol engeer, and he’d recently e out. A month beforehand, <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bangkok had celebrated</a> s first Pri march years—which was also his first Pri march ever. So we bought him a drk to celebrate, and when I asked how he liked the cy’s queer scene he grned. If you were jt lookg to cise, he said, wavg at some olr whe guys oglg a pair of twks wrapped Gucci, then the bars were great. But the panmic hadn’t been kd to many of <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">the cy’s queer tablishments</a>.</p><p class="paywall">A lot of folks jt hang out at home, he said. Tourist life and lol queerns are different.</p><p class="paywall">Another club I equented unrled this dynamic. Tucked away on the upper floor of a nearby shoppg mall, was basilly a lol bear bar. The vibe felt worlds away om the eveng strip’s sheen. Its clientele lounged beach chairs. The ocsnal expat sipped beer om a straw. A dubbed versn of the third “Transformers” movie played on a ty televisn by a Jacuzzi.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">One guy I met me om Indonia. He asked whether I was Thai-Mlim (I’m not), and, when I told him I lived the Stat, he asked how many of them I’d vised. He’d spent the last two years Jakarta by himself. But he wasn’t out to his fay. Indonia was a tough <a href=">place to be queer</a>, and Bangkok was a reprieve.</p><p class="paywall">I n let my guard down, he said. I n’t even tell you what that’s like.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">By the time we returned to Hoton, mpox—the disease often lled by the <a href=">harmful</a> name “monkeypox”—had been clared <a href=">a global health emergency</a>. The epimic had spread throughout <a href=">the untry</a>, while <a href=">ttg remaed virtually impossible</a>. One buddy picked up om a hookup. Another’s partner had a bsh wh after an y. The vacce requirements <a href=">were nstantly shiftg</a>: you uld possibly, maybe receive one, but only if you were emed sufficiently high-risk, and then only if you were “a man who had sex wh men,” <a href=">a wildly aquate qualifier</a>. The most accurate rmatn I received me not om the ernment but by way of gay bars, sex clubs, and other queer-forward spac hastily fortifyg rmal works.</p><p class="paywall">L and I spent a long Tuday on the phone, flailg for an available shot. Two weeks later, pullg up for our appotments, we found that we were the only non-whe folks le at a predomantly Black neighborhood’s muny center South Hoton. As turned out, the ernment had <a href=">sat on</a> hundreds of thoands of dos. In the followg month, supply stras would <a href=">exacerbate racial dispari</a> vacce accs and medil disenanchisement among queer folks of lor.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">But, at the end of July, Beyoncé released “<a href=">Renaissance</a>.” I started the album my r the morng after s release and simply never stopped playg . That same weekend, duckg through Hoton’s queer circu, I heard a d.j. a packed bar start one song om the rerd (“Heated”) before slippg to another (“Virgo’s Groove”) and then a third (“Pure/Honey”) as the room worked self to a pulsg huff of steam. When I fally stepped outsi for air, I was enfold to a group of folks still nng through the lyrics, clappg each other on our shoulrs and backs, nearly tearful, eply phoric.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">In Augt, realizg that I’d eher have to fish my novel or simply walk to the Gulf of Mexi, I holed up a Vanuver stud overlookg the downtown skyle. Most morngs, I ambled down to the Vietname der statned by the buildg’s garage, until the matron started headg stctively toward the ffee mache whenever I squeezed through the door. One eveng, I passed through a rtrant for katsu curry and noticed that an Indian guy was the only other person eatg alone. We exchanged pole s. A few hours later, nursg a drk at a queer bar, I spotted the same guy.</p><p class="paywall">He was visg wh his fay. He’d been hopg for a fun vatn, but mpox had him wary. He said that he’d jt graduated universy. I ngratulated him, and he asked whether he uld have a hug. When I gave him one, I uld feel his entire body relax. He said that he’d only recently started gog to the bars by himself, bee he wasn’t entirely out. I told him wasn’t a race, and he lghed.</p><p class="paywall">That’s what everyone keeps sayg, he add. But first there was <em class="small">COVID</em>? It feels like a raw al, like ’s all one risk after another.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">A few weeks later, back the Bay Area, I stood vapg wh some folks outsi a queer bar when a gray S.U.V. settled bi . Its driver unrolled the wdow, unstrapped himself om a seatbelt, and yelled that he was fe wh a queer bar his neighborhood, but that we need to keep our fag sh the buildg.</p><p class="paywall">He asked whether we unrstood. Four other smokers and I blked at one another. None of said anythg. There were too many uncerta variabl. Fally, the olst person standg among , a beard Filipo guy, said, Sure, honey, and the r rolled away.</p><p class="paywall">We stood silence for another beat, puffg away, a ltle rattled. Then another person, a Black dividual overalls, the smallt one among , said, He looked like his breath fuckg stank.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">In November, sleepwalkg toward a mancript adle, I vised Amsterdam. The cy unfurled a moody way, guid by nals and folks meanrg on bik along brick-lan roads. Every few streets, a ra-worn buildg sported the Progrs Pri flag.</p><p class="paywall">As far as I know there’s only one gay sna Amsterdam. On a weekday, was hardly populated. I end up stg a hot tub between two guys, one of whom said that he was om Spa, and the way of queers everywhere we started on our recent grievanc. The Spanish guy said that he was livg London for work. This was the first trip he’d taken sce relotg. He grew up a small town, and adolcence had been tough on him. London had been an tn, and now he was furtherg .</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">The other guy was whe and younger than both of . We’d taken him for a lol. But when we asked where he was om, he said Kyiv, and the realy of his suatn—the war across the ntent—sent a chill through the water.</p><p class="paywall">Holy fuck, we said.</p><p class="paywall">It’s all right, the guy replied. I’d never <em>been</em> to a gay bar. I’ve never been to a place like this, he said. I’m tryg new thgs—hopg for the bt, you know?</p><p class="paywall">We nodd. But how uld we possibly know?</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">The week before Thanksgivg, L and I lounged on the pat of our lol leather spot, bee I’d jt fished py eds on my novel and was time to celebrate. Then, startg at one end of Montrose, we reened om bar to bar. I managed to stay afloat until two the morng. A crisp chill hung over the pats. Folks huddled together as they passed, cheerg on strangers, implorg them to stay safe. A few hours later, we woke up to news of <a href=">the Club Q shootg</a> Colorado Sprgs. A shooter had killed five people the queer night club and wound at least neteen more.</p><p class="paywall">It all felt like—and all is—entirely too much. A untry that pris self on queer progrsivens on an ternatnal stage ref to provi safety and human rights for s rints. This month, the <a href=">Rpect for Marriage Act</a> has bee law, but what is the privilege of marriage to muni whout the basele necsi, who face regular vlence their attempts to secure them?</p><p class="paywall">On Thanksgivg eveng, after makg the rounds of our assorted found fai, we ma our way back to the queer bars, settlg to JR.’s. The atmosphere was muted. Looks of regnn passed om patron to patron. But, as the eveng progrsed, the room turned more crowd—never packed, but lively—until felt like beg prent for each other was a gift self.</p><p class="paywall">On the karaoke stage, a drag queen lamented the shootgs. She said that thgs were takg a turn for the worse. But then she asked whether anyone the room had somethg for to champn. One woman noted that she’d jt left a ten-year marriage. Another guy spoke about his new gig. A uple announced that they’d opened up their relatnship, drawg a stterg of cheers, bee this, too, was touchg: to see thgs normally renred visible allowed visibily wh this shared space.</p><p class="paywall">And perhaps this is one functn of queer spac: to give what is emed unworthy—by whe supremacy, by stigma, by palism—s brightns, even if only for a few hours. Flirtg at the bar is holy. Bidg time on a hookup app by the pool table is holy. A sleepy eveng sippg lewarm beer wh found fay is holy. Chattg wh the mcle-cub bartenr is holy. A midnight drag show on a week night is holy. Suckg dick a dark room is holy, and so is wag until you’ve gotten home, and so is optg out of the meat market entirely for a lazy pen waffle wh eggs at the all-you-n-eat der once the bars have closed. Comg out csantly is holy. Comg together is holy. A hastily anized y is holy.
