My hort’s experience of queer spac the form of the tradnal “gay bar” took place near the end of their heyday. Although the list of signifint cultural, enomic, polil and social chang that have fed my generatns adulthood is exhstgly long, I would argue that the cle of the gay bar is signifint enough to earn a place on that list, and like many of the chang did not happen a vacuum, but is eply tertwed wh many of the other signifint shifts that have occurred over the past several s. My own first experience wh gay bars was The Embassy – the storied (and somewhat notor) nightclub of Gore Park.

Gay people were existg openly!
Homophobia is certaly not over, but ’s ls wily acceptable than once was. In the late 90s and early 2000s sual homophobia was nstant, and the threat of vlence was omniprent.

Of urse, ’s important to acknowledge that this experience was not nsistent for all queer people, which is one of the reasons I believe “tradnal” gay bars have been on the cle for the past . Gay bars across North Ameri have historilly had issu prrizg all the letters the LGBTQ+ ialism equably, skewg towards whens, cisns, promotg toxic cultur of ialized masculy, and engagg sual pervasive misogyny. I sometim hear arguments that social media and apps like Grdr killed the gay bar, and certaly the emergence of other optns to fd muny certaly played a role, but screens n never tly replace muny spac, as queer people have been learng for the past (and as the rt of the world has been learng for the past uple of years).
A gay bar ed to be the only kd of place a gay person uld feel more or ls fully safe, and so that’s where you went. But as our culture has shifted towards more acceptance and homophobia has bee ls acceptable, many spac have bee safer, broang the list og possible plac to go and thgs to do.
Beg Asian Amerin and LGBTQ+ n feel lonely, wh stutns such as ethnic church often disavowg non-heterosexual relatnships while tradnal LGBTQ+ spac such as gay bars n be unwelg. * queer spaces hamilton *
The availabily of other means by which to nnect wh muny has served to she a light on the reasons why gay bars were not workg for everyone, but as those spac have disappeared, we have also learned that they nnot replace what we really need, which is queer spac that do better.
