Do matter that he’s not (necsarily) wrten as such? I’d argue no.</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="1400" height="1400" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" fetchprry="high" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Why then do matter to have a nversatn about Patrick Brewer beg on the Ace-spectm even when nonilly he may not be? In the bigger sense, bee the absence of more nonilly Ace characters, terpretg others as Ace is important.</p><p><span>This is historilly a thg we do as Queer folks anyway. Before you uld say gay on TV, or be gay on TV we would fd Queer-d characters. Or books, fd characters who were clearly </span><em>supposed </em><span>to be Queer but uldn’t be wrten as outright Queer. As a group, ’s what we’ve done scraped around until we fd a cmb of who we are and hung onto . Today there are more gay/bi characters on tv and film and books and that’s amazg. I don’t want to take away one sgle character om that reprentatn, we are owed after all. But we still don’t have Ace reprentatn, so as Ace folks we’re still scrapg around. So if readg Patrick Brewer as Demisexual, giv a scrap of reprentatn, then we should- reprentatn matters. As do silencg members of the LGBTQIA+ muny. Asexuals put the A LGBTQIA+ after all and they’re all too often silenced as a group. This nversatn also brgs up important on about fetishisatn fan spac of queer characters. But also is an important nversatn about havg people have the reprentatn that matters.</span></p><p>It’s important to note too, that readg Patrick Brewer as Demi, don’t take away om a) the broar reprentatn he offers as a character b) don’t actually tract om his gayns eher.</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="750" height="422" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p><span>So to take a) first. Us readg Patrick as Demi don’t tract om him beg an important reprentatn of gay men on TV. He is still the Patrick Brewer on TV who married a man on one of the most succsful Canadian edy dramas of all time. He’s still the Patrick Brewer who offers hope to people g out later life. He’s still the Patrick Brewer who sang </span><em>that </em><span>song and gave all a new gay anthem. He’s still the Patrick Brewer who loved David Rose.</span></p><p>Readg him this way don’t tract om all the reprentatn si and outsi the world of the show that he gave, any more than someone cidg which baseball team he supports or that he’s a Star Trek fan do. What he do on screen still stands. The fan-led nclns or terpretatns jt embellish and add to . On one level, cidg he’s a Maple Leav fan bee brgs fellow Maple Leav fans joy and solidary wh a favoure character is the same thg- don’t alter what’s on-screen but brgs that fan joy. My readg Patrick as Demi don’t alter Patrick on screen, or Patrick for anyone else. But means a lot to me.</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="1400" height="933" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Bee if you allow people to terpret him as Demi/Ace giv him so much more to a group of people. You give them the reprentatn they’d sorely lack. You give them a character they love on their ‘team’ and you do whout losg anythg. In fact, unrstandg him as Demi might add somethg to the character. Bee him beg mi don’t actually make him ls gay. It actually might expla his story more. But people seem ristant to that (somethg we’ll return to later).</p><p>This stems of urse om a fundamental lack of unrstandg of asexualy. In fact, asexualy as a label tersects wh many labels. So Patrick may be homosexual and asexual. This means he is attracted romantilly (and possibly sexually to a gree) to men. But also that he do not feel sexual attractn the domant (or Allosexual) way that a lot of humans do. In fact, his misexualy or asexualy might ed acunt for the character’s not disverg his homosexualy earlier his life.</p><p><span>The way Patrick scrib never feelg ‘right’ before also feels like the way a lot of asexual people talk about their experienc. The ia of jt gog along wh thgs, of not feelg the thgs you’re supposed to, the way they’re scribed books- TV even- is a very asexual experience. And how when many realise their orientatn also a way of explag to others. Patrick </span><em>do </em><span>feel for David, and he monstrat his sexual sire for him. This leads to the potential Demisexual label, his feelgs are only triggered by close nnectn. The two n be lked- his attractn to men overall but only very specific circumstanc.</span></p><p>How do that work? In the story, Patrick don’t realise he’s gay until he falls for David, that’s an accepted part of the story. Whether or not he had slight klgs before might be up for terpretatn but if we take the show as read, David was the first time he veloped an attractn towards a man. So Patrick on beg attracted to David disvers for the first time an attractn that feels ‘right’. So far so non.</p><p>We don’t meet a Patrick qutng his sexualy and experimentg wh a man he meets a small town. In the show, we assume heteronormativy has ed Patrick to never ‘experiment’ like many he assumed he’s straight bee that’s the flt. But what if too, he assumed he’s not asexual bee that’s the flt? Bee fact what he scrib also aligns wh misexualy 101. Patrick don’t feel ‘right’ until he kiss David the show.</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="740" height="370" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p>In the show, we very clearly see a man who falls for very specifilly one other human. We see Patrick beg drawn to this man (admtedly a man like no other he’s likely met before) like he’s been drawn to nobody else before. He don’t experience ‘the thgs you’re supposed to feel’ until he kiss David. What he means is he don’t experience attractn, sexual sire, until David. The fn of misexualy is only experiencg sexual attractn wh someone you form an emotnal bond wh. So we n argue that fact, Patrick had never formed a close enough emotnal bond wh someone before. Bee of that, he had never tly experienced sexual attractn fully before eher. What we uld also argue is this lack of unrstandg of himself, his orientatn, had prevented him disverg his gayns bee he’d also never allowed himself to form such a bond wh a man before, not knowg was an optn, not knowg that would lead to actual full sexual attractn.</p><p>If David lik the we, not the label, a way Patrick do too that he fell for David regardls of prev thoughts about his sexual orientatn. But Patrick lik only this very specific brand of we, fact, ’s the only we he’s ever wanted to drk. The first time we ever tasted good to him, and ’s bee he unrstands and got to know that we and thgs about before he drank . Knowg about the we ma him want to try , and enjoy once he did. To extend further, he learned that general red we (guys) was the we for him all along not whe (girls). But probably he’d still have to get to know the gredients of any red we before drkg .</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="320" height="227.75800711743776" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>If we want to dive eper too, when we look at other teractns Patrick has the show, they support a misexual hypothis. When David ph him to go on a ‘date’ wh Ken, he tri and fails to go through wh . Bee theory he fds Ken attractive but don’t as David misterprets, want to pursue anythg sexual. For David an allosexual person (person who experienc sexual attractn) he assum that if Patrick fds Ken attractive, he will want to have sex wh him. The way to expla the ntext of the show perhaps that is, what happens ‘Happy Endg’. David, an allosexual person, is offered what he believ to be an thorised/nsequence-ee sexual enunter. He fds the massse attractive, so go for . Patrick our mi/Ace readg would not have gone for ( the same way he didn’t wh Ken) not through any moral element, but bee he don’t feel that ‘thg’ if there’s not a nnectn.</p><p>For many allosexuals, this is a nfg readg/experience that they eher say that ‘well everyone feels that’ or ‘’s jt beg rpectful’ or ‘’s not the same’. While to a gree many people choose not to act on the sexual attractn they still feel . For Ace/Demi folks, they simply do not feel the same way.</p><p><span>In the nversatn about Ken too, Patrick fds him objectively attractive. Patrick as Ace/Demi experienc athetic attractn- so he ments that Ken ed is attractive, jt as he earlier has mented on Ted’s attractivens. But he do not or nnot take that to the next level bee he don’t have an emotnal bond wh him as he do David. Somethg that allosexual David, who if offered the chance would have sex wh an attractive person, do not unrstand- and the show is the root of his secury at that moment. In the show, we n read as loyalty or a mment to monogamy (although this don’t necsarily track wh David and Patrick’s willgns to partmentalise sex later episos like ‘Happy Endg’). In our readg of Patrick as Ace/Demi, ’s that he jt don’t have a specific </span><em>sexual </em><span>attractn to Ken, due to that lack of emotnal/other nnectn.</span></p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="498" height="407" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p><span>We n see this aga their enunter wh Jake as a throwback to Patrick’s pre-David life n also feel faiar- somewhat unnervgly so- for many Demi/Ace folks. Patrick go along wh bee ’s what David wants to (or thks he wants to) do. Bee mak you feel ‘ol’ or ‘totally on board’ wh what a partner wants. In this readg of him as Ace/Demi, ’s a ld-water-through-you faiary for an Ace person of ‘jt gog along wh ’ bee ’s what people do. Patrick’s panic and n out might be the ntext of the show jtifiably bee there are ed a lot of people there, but also that faiar panic cut and n that many an Ace person has had on ‘threat’ of a sexual enunter. This too the show feels like what he talked about happeng pre-David, for years wh Rachel and the other women bee that’s what you do. The enunters for Patrick then show the light and sha of not only genr, but very specifilly </span><em>David</em><span> beg who/what feels right. And that is a very Ace/Demi approach.</span></p><p>The readg of Patrick as Ace-Spec here also fs wh him not beg a prevly closeted gay man or gay man who didn’t know who he was lookg to experiment. Instead, he is an ace-spec gay man who has found a person wh whom he has sexual attractn. To take a step further if we wanted to, we don’t actually know much about David and Patrick’s sex life beyond their first enunter at Stevie’s so for those of who want to read Patrick on this spectm the show giv lots of spe om what don’t talk about.</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="638" height="382" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p>It’s here too that the separatn of sex and love that Dan Levy has mentned also supports our readg. Levy mentns the Entertament Weekly terviews about the fale, that for David and Patrick sex and love are separate. So his view, that’s why the ‘Happy Endg’ isn’t a threat to their relatnship, as their love is separate om any sexual enunter. This is also why David giv permissn prciple for Patrick and Ken. But this n also support our readg of Patrick as Demi/Ace. For asexual people, sex means somethg else. So asi om sex-repulsed asexuals who don’t enjoy any kd of sexual enunter, many asexual people will engage sex for other reasons; closens to a partner, physil pleasure (asexualy is about attractn, not the abily to experience pleasure), emotnal nnectn/exprsn and not fettg fun. For many asexual folks, the equatn of sex = mment and loyalty isn’t the same, for them, that’s not where the mment to a partner li. So aga wh David as allosexual and Patrick as Demi/Ace, we n actually see why sex is a sendary ditor of their bond. It’s part of what they do, for var reasons, but ’s not the reason for their bond. So this too explas why the ‘happy endg’ along wh Ken, and Jake aren’t a big al their relatnship.</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="634" height="357" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p>What Patrick scrib too, his ‘all those thgs you’re supposed to feel’ and his ‘you make me feel right’ to David aligns wh a lot of asexual people’s experienc too. It’s not until someone pots out that most asexual people unrstand that they feel differently. If we read Patrick as misexual, and once he forms that bond wh David he do feel those feelgs ’s a siar thg- not realisg somethg was missg until isn’t. Of urse, this too aligns wh gayns, but this hopefully illtrat why a number of asexual people align their experience wh Patrick’s. They n realise that like him, they didn’t know somethg wasn’t the ‘real’ experience until chang, or at least until someone pots out.</p><p>Why then are people ristant to dg Patrick Brewer as misexual?</p><p>Perhaps a simple misunrstandg. It’s easy to say ‘of urse he’s not he has sex wh David’ whout unrstandg asexualy. Hell even ‘he had sex wh Rachel.’</p><p>But also has to do wh a eper rooted ace-phobia and gatekeepg the queer muny. And fandom spac, to do wh the fetishisatn of gay men.</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="1079" height="624" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Let’s start wh the more nocent end of the spectm. People are ill-rmed about asexualy, that’s jt a fact. In general, ’s misunrstood, and ’s a knee jerk reactn to reject somethg you don’t unrstand. This is why te reprentatn is important, but so is listeng to the muny. People have started to listen to the queer muny- Dan Levy himself is proof of that. So maybe ’s time to listen to other more margalised groups too.</p><p>Sendly, there is a view that ace-isn’t-queer-enough. Siar to our bi and pan iends, we get shut out of the bary elements of what queer means. Particularly those who are heterosexual/Ace aga much like bi/pan folks hetero relatnships, get shut out. Not ol enough, not queer enough. Aga this is why we need reprentatn and nversatn.</p><p>Fally, why fandom spac is this nsired a ‘wrong’ answer to a qutn?</p><p><span>Fetisihsatn. We have to say the dirty word that nobody lik acknowledgg. But fandom spac, and specifilly fan fictn spac are populated by a lot of fetishisatn. That is straight women (largely) g stori about, and actual gay men ( terms of actors, and adjacently characters) as a fetish. As simply sexual gratifitn. Now there’s nothg wrong wh rivg sexual gratifitn om a story, or a show or a movie. Or hell even how someone looks. I’m told, by my Allosexual brothers and sisters, that’s how works. But cross a le when that’s </span><em>all </em><span>someone’s sexualy is to you. When that’s all reprentatn is. That be appropriatn too, when you, not om a particular group ( this se the umbrella LGBTQ+ group) start dictatg what reprentatn looks like. And this se, when only looks like somethg to satisfy straight sexual gratifitn, we have a problem.</span></p><p>Or when straight women also jt want to adopt, and pet gay men bee they’re ‘so cute’ ‘so adorable’ ‘prec babi’ this fantilisatn, is jt as sultg, and unpleasant as fetishisatn. It also prevents the kds of nversatns about nuanced inti that this one falls to. That clus bi/pan phobia and reprentatn, this also clus genr exprsn and inty and y, asexual inti. Bee when fans rce queer characters to eher somethg fetishised or fantilised, eras the very real lived experience of the groups.</p><p><span>While we’re tangentially there, why do </span><em>wrg </em><span>Patrick as Ace/Demi fanfictn also matter? Bee firstly the same kd of reprentatn we’re talkg about across this discsn. Bee allows Ace/Demi folks to have a voice and be seen. The same way David Rose allows Pan folks to be seen and have a voice. To borrow David’s phrase ‘I feel like that should be celebrated’ allowg people a voice is important. The thg about fanfictn too is allows for the non-adjacent exploratns. The thgs hted at the show but not explored. So for example, every one of David’s terrible relatnships are hted at and not tailed the show, which has led to fans’ ncln David has had at bt dysfunctnal, at worst abive relatnships the past and wrten fics about . That’s no more a leap than takg hts that align wh Demisexualy and explorg them fic. Or if we’re gog down the sexual route too, there’s no nonil evince David and Patrick enjoy any or all of the var sexual fetish explored fanfictn, but that’s never stopped anyone wrg them. Nor has meant fans got shamed for wrg them.</span></p><p>Why aga might be an obstacle for fans wrg misexualy? Bee aga, all of the above; the ia that asexuals don’t belong. The ia that unls ’s a super cute or super-hot versn of the characters people love, don’t ‘unt’.</p><p>And here is why breaks my heart.</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="750" height="422" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Demisexual Patrick is the Patrick I love. I loved that versn of him before I had the word for . Before I had the word for myself. He and that readg and specifilly the wrg of him gave me that language for myself.</p><p>When I read/talked about and y wrote Patrick fanfictn, I wrote him as a misexual gay man. I wrote all the feelgs I terpreted om non to a man who had never really, tly fallen for someone. Someone who never really fallg, or nnectg wh someone, had never felt that ‘thg’ you’re supposed to feel. Until was David until the birds started sgg and mic started playg. For me, that’s what ma Patrick’s sexualy ‘click’ the fact that he ‘clicked’ wh someone.</p><p>Long story short someone mented on a fanfic that he read as misexual my wrg. I got exced, realised I had a word for how I’d read him. That person promptly squashed my excement by clarg ‘that’s not how he’s wrten non though’</p><p>Well maybe he’s not but he’s not wrten as a leather fetish lovg domatrix eher but that hasn’t stopped people.</p><p>But the pot is, there’s much unsaid non. Of every show, but if we stick wh this one. David isn’t named as havg anxiety, prsn or even tism, but the are valid terpretatns of the show and the character that have been wrten fictn and analysis. Moira’s mental illns isn’t named, and there are many terpretatns of that also. All the readgs help people, jt like the stori where David has and surviv abive relatnships. Or Patrick helps David overe his anxiety, or tak re of him while prsed. Patrick himself never nam his sexualy out loud (his parents do, he don’t) so why then is such a leap to let people have the readg that helps them?</p><p>Bee helped me. I wouldn’t have the words for who I am if wasn’t for Patrick Brewer. Those nversatns there- and later wh other fic wrers and other Ace fans ( every sense of the word) of the show led me to see I wasn’t the only one readg him that way. I uld cry wh relief that I wasn’t crazy readg him, and me that way. That revelatn changed my life. Hearg him say ‘you make me feel right’ and realisg I had never felt right, led me on a path that changed my life. It don’t matter if ‘my’ Patrick Brewer isn’t your Patrick Brewer. What surely matters most, what is the ethos of the show, is that he led me to unrstand who I am.</p><p>Why do matter the bigger sense then?</p><p>Reprentatn. You n’t be what you n’t see. Even if you have to do a ltle creative terpretg.</p><p>For me then, readg Patrick Brewer as misexual was a huge part of my own experience of intifyg my asexualy. But also, as a sometim scholar of TV too, ’s a great exercise readg TV through different lens.</p><p>It’s not about whether the character is nonilly asexual, ’s about what the character means. I n look at more non-ish or non-adjacent characters I’ve loved my past too. So lookg back I loved The Doctor om Doctor Who (almost certaly, nonilly ace) and Sherlock Holm several rnatns (Ace-adjacent pendg on the terpretatn) or Mr Data and Seven of Ne Star Trek (Canonilly Ace spir if not name). More recently I’ve sought out books wh ace characters and they have had a huge life-changg impact. I’ve even wrten my own Ace characters my own work.</p><p>‘But he don’t tick all the box’</p><p>He don’t tick all the cliche box for a gay man, bee gus what there isn’t an exam to pass for eher. But particular, ace-spec inti, ’s a spectm. So if Patrick don’t tick all the box but if he ticks enough for to see as one of , that matters. Even if not wrten as Demi there is so ltle Ace-Spectm reprentatn media anyway that ’s important there are a character viewers n read this way. Laggg behd other reprentatns, ace-spectm folks are where gay and lbian folks were a generatn ago- readg between the l to fd reprentatns.</p><div class="ptned-image-ntaer"><figure><a class="image-lk is-viewable-img image2" target="_blank" href=" data-ponent-name="Image2ToDOM" rel><div class="image2-set"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" /><img src=" width="630" height="630" data-attrs="{"src":"" class="sizg-normal" alt tle srcset=" 424w, 848w, 1272w, 1456w" siz="100vw" loadg="lazy" /></picture><div class="image-lk-expand"><svg xmlns=" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="#FFFFFF" stroke-width="2" stroke-lep="round" stroke-lejo="round" class="luci luci-maximize2"><polyle pots="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyle><polyle pots="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyle><le x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></le><le x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></le></svg></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Fally readg Patrick as Demi also don’t alter his story.
