GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANC SCHOOLS

Fifty-three percent of sendary school teachers believe that havg a GSA would help make schools safer for gay and transgenr stunts. While there is a void of natnal rearch about amic achievement for gay and transgenr youth, the California Safe Schools Coaln has produced a number of rearch briefs that look at the impact harassment and discrimatn based on sexual orientatn and genr inty has on amic achievement and school safety California schools. Thirty-one percent of gay and transgenr youth who felt safe at school received mostly A’s, pared to 18 percent who did not feel safe at school.

Thirty-five percent of gay and transgenr youth who felt safe at school received A’s and B’s, pared to 26 percent who did not feel safe at school.

Eighty-three percent of gay and transgenr stunts who strongly feel safe at school have plans to go to llege, pared to 67 percent of those who do not feel safe at school. The study found that gay and transgenr stunts schools wh GSAs are ls likely to drop out and more likely to succeed higher tn. Dpe knowg the harm that bullyg and harassment have on gay and transgenr youth—and that GSAs n help lsen this impact—there are some schools across the untry that try to prohib youth om formg the groups.

Gay and transgenr youth should not have to look forward to the summer bee provis a few months ee om bullyg and harassment. A GSA will not pletely elimate bullyg and harassment, but the groups do help create a climate where gay and transgenr youth n thrive, learn, and grow.

I have a very clear memory of the moment I learned that my son’s high school had a gay-straight alliance (GSA), a club dited to helpg gay and lbian kids feel safe and accepted. Back then, I had no klg one of my sons would turn out to be gay, but I immediately thought of another boy I knew who I felt pretty sure was (he me out about six months later).

GAY-STRAIGHT/GENRS & SEXUALI ALLIANC

” I’d heard stori of gay kids who’d been mistreated, suffered mental health problems and even mted suici bee of the rough ri they had high school.
