But gay? Gay Street is one of a handful of one-block long streets Manhattan, loted jt wt of the htle and btle of Sixth Avenue, between Christopher Street and Waverly Place. Wh a bend at s northern end, you n never really see the street s entirety one view; the three and four story Feral and Greek Revival-style ho which le much of s length give Gay Street a remarkably timate feel, while the larger nverted late 19th century factori at s northern end adds to the sense of visual isolatn by blockg out the more morn apartment buildgs jt to the north.

In the later 19th and early 20th century, when the Village was the center of New York’s Ain-Amerin muny, many of the rints of Gay Street were black, and many were micians (read more the Greenwich Village Historic District signatn report). Gay Street stands out, even the quirky tangle of Wt Village streets. Notable later rints of Gay Street clud wrer Ruth McKenna and her sister Eileen, whose experience livg the basement of #13 was the basis for the book, play, and movie “My Sister Eileen, ” and later the Broadway mil “Wonrful Town.

So we know Gay Street is charmg and lerary. But is really “gay“? In morn parlance, “gay” has e to mean attracted to the same sex.

But this was not always so, and the word’s evolutn, tertgly, mirrors that of Gay Street and s environs as well. Gay origally meant happy, reee, exuberant. However, by the late 19th and pecially the early 20th century, the nnotatns of the word gay me to be creasgly associated wh a liftyle unfettered by the nventns of the day; as time went on, this pecially me to mean the sexual nventns of the day.

The term ‘gay’ was associated wh both men and women, many of whom lived plac like Greenwich Village or Paris, often habu of the f and clubs of the unnventnal muni, typilly unmarried, equently whout tradnal jobs, who did not seem to re what the rt of the world thought of them, and lived the “gay life. ” No doubt some of the inoclasts were “gay” by today’s fn, but many were not.

It was not until the mid-20th century that e of the term “gay” me to more monly mean specifilly those attracted to the same sex, and not until the late 20th century that this fn had e to eclipse other and associatns. Up through the mid-20th century, gay nnoted an unnventnal liftyle, but not necsarily same-sex attractn. Of urse durg this same time perd Greenwich Village, and the Wt Village particular, also evolved om beg one of the premiere lol for those who were “gay”– as unfettered by ntemporary nventns — to, more specifilly, a mec for those who were “gay, ” as attracted to the same sex.

So where this arc of the evolutn of the meang of the word gay, and of Greenwich Village’s inty, did Gay Street get s name?

10 GAY STREET #3E

Acrdg to “The Street Book: An Encyclopedia of Manhattan’s Street Nam and Their Origs” by Henry Mosw (one of many books available GVSHP’s library), the name Gay Street first appears officially the New York Cy Common Council mut on April 23, 1827 — when Greenwich Village was first beg settled as a suburb of New York by merchants fleeg the yellow fever epimics downtown, and long before Greenwich Village had e to acquire any associatns wh the “gay” life — reee, same-sex, or otherwise. In fact, while the exact orig of the name of Gay Street do not appear to be nclively tablished, most thori on the matter believe that was likely a fay name, sce most (but not all) streets the area were named for lol fai, and acrdg to Mosw, newspapers om the late 18th century do show at least one man wh the surname Gay who lived not far away on the Bowery. In part bee of the street’s associatn wh Ain-Amerins, has often been assumed that the street was named for Sidney Howard Gay, edor of the Natnal Anti-Slavery Standard.

But he would have been only 13 when the first published reference to “Gay Street” appeared, makg this highly unlikely. Gay Street lookg north. So while Gay Street is one of the Village’s most charmg and lerary streets, and s name do, by a wonrful cince, reflect important elements of the Wt Village’s distctive and evolvg character, appears that the origs of the name are not really “gay” at all — at least not the ntemporary sense.
