In 2014 only 46 feet stood between the historic Gay Head Lighthoe on the wt ast of Martha’s Veyard and a retreatg cliff face. Racg agast time and ti, lol rints and muny groups got volved, obtag ownership of the light and raisg the funds necsary to move back om the cliff and out of harm’s current Gay Head Lighthoe was built 1852 and pleted 1856. The 52-foot light replaced the area’s first lighthoe, an octagonal woon stcture which was built 1799 to gui whalg ships and other vsels passg by Gay Head, and to help them steer clear of Devil’s Bridge, a dangero shoal of boulrs that extends northeast off the ast of Aqunah for about a e.

Many are likely aware of the move of Gay Head Light back om the cliff’s edge 2015, but erosn the area is nothg new.

Acrdg to rearch nducted by the Martha’s Veyard Commissn, om 1845 to 1979 the Gay Head cliffs ntued to ero at a rate of two and one-half feet per year.
