fCNcvb gallery-embed__hr"/></div></le-embed><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">The drawgs of the late-neteenth-century English illtrator and thor Aubrey Beardsley are so sexually charged that even a cric as generally snobbish and patrician as Kenh Clark, acuntg for his youthful fondns for them, all but scribed the works, a 1976 say for <em>The New York Review of Books</em>, as toerotic visual aids. Callg the drawgs “<a href=">a kd of tmt to adolcents</a>,” Clark wrote that they “suggted vice . . . wh an adolcent tensy which munited self through every fold and tightly drawn outle of an ostensibly stere style.” He add, “I like to thk that my tert was not only sexual.”</p><p class="paywall">Beardsley did not thk of himself as a pornographer—he thought of himself as a fe artist and a dandy. He ran wh the Brish Dents, who worshipped bety. They were spired and amed by the antics and the art of the Amerin expatriate Jam McNeill Whistler. They grew up a post-Romantic era and were stimulated, visually, by the works of the Pre-Raphael. They hung out, most notorly, wh Osr Wil.</p><p class="paywall">But the era of dandy nce was short-lived. Osr Wil was arrted for “<a href=">gross cency</a>” (that is, homosexualy) 1895, and imprisoned, <a href=">followg his famo trial</a>, shortly thereafter. He died 1900. Beardsley died two years before, of tuberculosis, havg also been tarnished the Wil sndal—his iendship wh Wil was nsired spicly close, g him to lose his job as art edor for <em>The Yellow Book</em>, a quarterly he -found. Edward Burne-Jon, the last of the great Pre-Raphael, died the same year, and Whistler died 1903. As the new century me on, the great figur of the late neteenth century burned out.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Somethg of that tensn between past and future is visible Beardsley’s work. It is the art of a dyg era peerg, wh a mixture of excement and trepidatn, to the next. For all the prancg and bravado, Beardsley’s art was really about fdg somethg which to believe—and if Beardsley me to believe anythg was the ep black le. Shadg held ltle tert for Beardsley, and lor fascated him not at all. The black le and whe space were all he need.</p><p class="paywall">That fah the strong black le is everywhere evint a geo new two-volume talogue raisonné_ _of Beardsley’s work, published by Yale Universy Prs and eded by Lda Gertner Zatl, who also provis helpful mentary for each drawg. Thumbg through the talogue, which is stctured chronologilly, ’s obv jt when Beardsley found his le, and therefore his style: May, 1892. That month, Beardsley ma a drawg lled “Incip Va Nova” (“New Life Begs”). The drawg is darker and ls fed than Beardsley’s later work, but all the elements of his mature geni are sudnly prent. The drawg shows the head of a woman next to the body of an angry, misshapen fet. The woman uld be a figure a Pre-Raphaele picture. But the fet—as the tle of the drawg suggts—is somethg new. Zatl lls the drawg “an act of rebelln agast the Pre-Raphael and a lk to the Symbolist avant-gar.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">When Beardsley created “Incip Va Nova,” he was not yet twenty years old. He was impatient wh the world and searchg for a voice of his own. The glarg eye of his angry fet says as much. But why is the ltle creature so angry? His mother appears to be a lovely woman; she’s simply given birth to a eakish offsprg. That Beardsley intified wh this odd creature seems certa. In an terview, he once claimed, “If I am not grotque, I am nothg.”</p><p class="paywall">That fascatn wh the grotque through much of his bt work. Look, for stance, at one of his more succsful early drawgs, lled “The Kiss of Judas,” which a chunky dwarf kiss the arm of a betiful main. (The dwarf uld, actually, be a grown-up versn of Beardsley’s angry fet.) In this drawg, Beardsley’s style has reached matury. Great areas of space are marked out by simple, fluid strok of the pen; the pool of black that mak up the main’s drs has a seemgly fe pth. Breakg up that pool is the naked whe body of the Judas, outled jt a few strok, chebilly nocent om the belly button down, and posively menacg about the face and head.</p><p class="paywall">Beardsley had disvered a simple style by which he uld liver plex imag of the grotque. His technique was hybrid. He looked backward, studyg medieval woodblocks and Renaissance drawgs—he once claimed he got the spiratn for the blackns of his black le om a passage Boccc: “The grass was so green that was nearly black.” But, creatg his black l, he also looked forward, to the emergg technologi of his own age. As Zatl not, “Beardsley showed the way to brg art to the public speedily and wh a lowered st of productn: he exploed the photomechanil technique known as ‘procs’ or ‘le-block.’ ” In le-block, drawgs were photographed and then transferred directly to a zc plate, om which unlimed prts uld be ma, whout losg the clary of the origal drawg. This new technology allowed Beardsley to create mass-produced imagery that jumped off the page. In his masterpiece, “The Climax”_ _(1893), an illtratn for an edn of Osr Wil’s “Salome,” Salome floats above a pool of black k, cradlg the severed head of John the Baptist her hands, poised for a fal kiss. The ils of Salome’s hair drift upward toward the top of the drawg. Salome’s hoverg body and John’s disembodied head pop out of the whe at the center of the page—and le-block prtg prerv the drawg’s urgency.</p><p class="paywall">Explag his drawgs once, an terview, Beardsley said that there was “nothg new” his technique, “except my ia of the value of the le.” Artists, he explaed, “are the hab of g th l to exprs backgrounds, and thick l to exprs foregrounds.” His ia was that one uld create a better effect “if the background and foreground are drawn wh l the same thickns.” Wh that simple ncept, Beardsley sentially wrote his own chapter the history of drawg. His fluence on the look of Art Nouve, and then on early mornism, is hard to overstate. His thick black l fed the graphil ias of the past wh the techniqu and subject matter of a new age jt on the horizon. As to subject matter, there’s no qutn that the odd and ambiguo sexualy of his Salome drawgs, for stance, was jt what the tim mand. Zatl, referrg to his illtratns for an 1893 edn of Sir Thomas Mallory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur,” wr, “The hermaphrod, effemate men, sexual women, transvt and voyrs that para through the and other drawgs . . . reveal Beardsley’s awarens of the refn of genrs and the sex, of the new field of sexology, and of Krafft-Ebg’s termology.”</p><p class="paywall">Beardsley’s transvt and hermaphrod are still marvello to look at, but the pleasure is nsirably amplified when one notic his wty referenc to Botticelli, Dürer, even Holbe the Younger. Like other morn artists, Beardsley is nstant munitn wh the past. (When Ezra Pound first wrote his famo dictum “make new,” he was cg a proverb scribed <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">on the bathtub of an ancient Che emperor</a>.) His firm black le was supple and flexible enough to move wh the fashns of late-neteenth-century London and to stand alongsi the woodcuts by the great medieval masters. Beardsley lived as a fop a foppish i. He died at twenty-five.
