We uld no longer ignore the environmental and humanarian nsequenc of our predilectns for fast food and fast fashn, and the <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">mall</a> reprented the nsumerist culture we sought to blame.</p><p>And yet, as we near the third year of a panmic that mak aimlsly wanrg around doors for hours seem unnecsary at bt, or adly at worst, I fd myself longg for the qutsential shoppg mall experience. Closg my ey, I n almost hear the gurglg churn of a chlorated penny pool and savor the salty sweet taste of a warm Auntie Anne’s pretzel… two thgs that Amazon Prime n never liver.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p>But what I really long for is not jt the neart <a href=" target="_blank">mall</a>, but the mall I worked at my youth, the Rimrock Mall Billgs, Montana. Maybe you n relate. How many of spent our formative years fishg ar money out of the atrium founta, suckg down an Orange Juli while gossipg about first kiss and school csh, or slatherg on the inic cucumber melon lotn om Bath and Body Works? For many suburban kids growg up the ’80s, ’90s, and early ’00s, the shoppg mall was jt about the only place to be seen public.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p><a href=" target="_blank">Nostalgia</a> n be a eply powerful emotn, pecially durg tim of uncertaty or unease. We tend to remisce about our youth, about ‘simpler tim,’” durg the moments of turbulence. (What I wouldn’t give to be bored a Spencer’s Gifts 2002 right about now.) But nostalgia for the mall isn’t only about romanticizg our adolcence–bee mall culture isn’t jt a thg of the past for <em>you</em>; ’s sentially a thg of the past <em>all together</em>.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="ugr8"></div></div><p>In the 1960s an <a href=" target="_blank">average</a> of at least three new shoppg centers opened every sgle day Ameri. By 1975, malls and shoppg centers acunted for a third of all retail sal the U.S. The ’80s were the goln age of shoppg malls, offerg movie theaters and ars, hostg bety pageants and performanc. And the ’90s gave the megamall, replete wh aquariums, roller asters, and zip l. But by the mid-ghts, the mall space was oversaturated. Landlords had e to rely on retailers like JCPenney, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Sears—known the dtry as anchor stor—to sign long-term leas for multi-level spac that would attract a broad cross sectn of the shoppg public.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Wh multiple malls per town, there simply weren’t enough of the anchor stor to go around, makg very difficult for olr malls to pete wh newer on to fill vanci and sign leas. (The fancial llapse certaly didn’t help, eher.) In 2007, not a sgle new mall was built the entire Uned Stat for the first time sce malls were vented 1956. By 2008, <a href=" target="_blank"><em>Newsweek</em></a> had clared the door mall obsolete.</p><p>This all beg said, succsful malls do, fact, still exist. But alongsi them are a slew that <a href=" target="_blank">have closed and rema standg</a>. Termed “ad malls,” the gargantuan buildgs are too expensive to repair, or knock down. And so, they s, y, and wa. They wa for someone to e along and film them.
