"I was already an obssive nsumer of rerd reviews. I jt loved the bat, the nversatn about mic, even if was a one-way nversatn. I knew I wasn’t a good wrer, and I had no pretens about that, but my perspective was, I have strong nvictns about mic, I re about immensely, and I’m jt gog to wre like I talk.” That reviews would have sr was a given. “I liked when there was a sre wh the review, bee would kd of serve as an entry pot,” he says. “But I also thought that if the se was gog to be a daily, then was gog to need a wir rangg srg system.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>The first review to go live, wrten by Schreiber, was for <em>Pacer</em>, the lone album by the Amps, a si project fo<em>r</em> Kim Deal while the Breers were on hiat. It was a hotly tipped rerd at the time bee her primary group’s last LP, <em>Last Splash</em>, had been such a phenomenon. <em>Pacer</em> received an 8.2, though ially that ratg would have appeared as 82%—for a while, sr were prented as percentag rather than the numeral-and-tenth sle we all know and love. (We listened recently, and ’s still the 8s, easily.) The piece is 132 words long. Both rerds me out January 1996. Joseph brought 12 Rods to Schreiber. “He lived Mneapolis, and I was still the suburbs,” Schreiber says. “He was olr, gog to shows every night and wrg reviews for a lol paper lled <em>The Squealer</em>. Jason had seen 12 Rods live and was blown away, and he bought the CD of <em>Gay?</em> at their merch table and ma me a py. We both went crazy for .” But there was very ltle thought or discsn about givg an album a perfect sre or plantg a flag by champng a lol band. “It never me up. We didn’t have any rears, one, and two, the ter was jt so new, the dividg le between lol and global wasn’t really prent." But Schreiber still listens to that first 10.0. “To me, holds up,” he says. “The sre obvly throws expectatns way out of whack, and the tle is unfortunate. But me when the se’s rearship was growg and was notable part bee went agast the cril gra. <em>Rollg Stone</em> gave <em>NYC Ghosts</em> 3.5 stars, <em>SPIN</em> gave an 8 out of 10, and at the <em>Village Voice</em>, Robert Christg gave an A. Pchfork’s Brent DiCrcenzo didn’t jt thk was overrated—he thought was downright horrible. Schreiber is pretty sure he hadn’t even heard the album when the review ran. “We liked to do thgs that generated attentn, but nothg about was unual,” he says. “I remember batg some sr wh wrers—Jam Wisdom wantg to give <a href=">Save Ferris a 9.5</a>, for example—but not this one.”</p><p>DiCrcenzo eventually me around on the rerd and even grew to love . In 2013, he <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">wrote a mea culpa</a> when he was the mic edor of <em>Time Out Chigo</em>. “I listened to that rerd two weeks ago, ’s probably one of the Sonic Youth albums that I’ve listened to the most at this pot,” he said when we ught up wh him recently. Brent DiCrcenzo wrote an enthiastic and florid 10.0 review of a very nsequential album om a very nsequential band—and the afterglow lgers to this day. People passed the review around the ter toutg s rare perfect sre and s acpanyg say that was as heartfelt as was bizarre. For many, put Pchfork on the map as a se that was dog somethg... different. Breakg away om the stylized snark of ze wrg and direct opposn to the lean reviews published magaz, DiCrcenzo’s paean to <em>Kid A</em> reflected a kd of earntns and purple-hued prose the se would e to knowgly embrace. (An early b of Pchfork merch was a t-shirt wh a wizard’s p on , a reference to a bemg le om the review: “...perfect as a wizard’s p”).</p><p>“I wanted my reviews to make the rear feel [how] the rerd ma me feel,” DiCrcenzo told <em>Billboard</em> a <a href=">retrospective terview</a>. “If the rerd ma me lgh, I’d try to make the dience lgh. If the album ma me emo, I would go heart-on-screen. <em>Kid A</em> immediately awed and exced me and ma me want to gh about .” Sce then the review has taken on a life of s own as a ttament to how wrg about mic n really be like dancg about archecture. But Dom, who listened to plenty of pop alongsi Boredoms si projects and rerds by the French progrsive rock band Magma, thought was a cent rerd and wrote a straightforward evaluatn. “There was a lot of that happeng on Pchfork back those days, where there was jt some mic that would jt eher never get wrten about or if was, was gog to be negative,” he tells . “I wouldn’t say I was a Kylie Mogue fan, specifilly. It was worth the wa. Marked by bulgg productn urty of the Neptun, the album offered a space-age sp on the plex them and wordplay of ’90s ke-rap tans like Biggie and Jay-Z.</p><hr/><h2>THE SITE GETS SPOOFED</h2><div role="headg" aria-level="3" class="headg-h3"><a href=">“Pchfork Giv Mic 6.8”</a> (2007)</div><p>By the mid-’00s, Pchfork had fally reached s “Weird Al” phase: famo enough to spire parody. In 2004, Sub Pop hosted <a href=">a fake Pchfork homepage</a> on s webse; 2005, David Cross wrote his own mock Pchfork reviews… <a href=">for Pchfork</a>. <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Nick Kroll played Ryan Schreiber on <em>Human Giant</em></a> 2006 and <a href=">Fred Armisen played him on <em>Portlandia</em></a> 2012. Youngblood sang wh an enthed yelp that sound a b like Robert Smh, the group’s ra-ra background chants brought to md the Go! Team, and the songs foced on fleetg csh and lastg heartache wh knowg humor. Later that month, New York Cy, the CMJ Mic Marathon would kick off, and Pchfork was not alone s excement for this new band. (Though Ghersi still publicly intified as male at the time, the album’s tular character was meant to reprent a nonbary alter ego.) It was the kd of succs that begs and ends reers the same moment, and the stak for his follow-up felt periloly high. After visg Ai 2014, Lamar scrapped two or three albums’ worth of material and reced a crew of jazz micians that were begng to emerge om L.A.'s btlg beat scene—Thunrt, Flyg Lot, Robert Glasper, Terrace Mart, Kamasi Washgton. The sound that emerged was fluenced as much by Donald Byrd and Mil Davis as Sly Stone, and was a stark parture om the warm, liquid ton and rattlg programmed dms of <em>GKMC</em>. The radil posivy of the first sgle, “Who’s That Lady”-samplg “i,” was quickly plited by the ragg “The Blacker The Berry,” which channeled 2Pac’s fire and whose tle relled “Keep Ya Head Up,” and the anthemic “Alright,” which Lamar performed atop a vandalized p r on that year’s BET Awards to the predictable brayg of nservative punds. Havg worked wh SOPHIE on the prev year’s <em>Vroom Vroom</em> EP, she was already attuned to the priste, hyperactive sound of PC Mic—but though was created wh producer A. G. Cook, <em>Pop 2</em> is different. Its songs have ls clatter and more btersweet emotn; even when the vols are garbled or the beat glch, the feelg is human. The manic, metallic sheen of Anxieti has been subdued and replaced wh more of the anic productn that marked Gay?, albe of much higher fily. Gay!
