One weekend, Zazula asked Stt Ian if he wanted to hear “No Life ’Til Leather,” a seven-song mo that Metalli rerd before Burton joed. The songs were raw and ranged, distguished by the band’s adolcent mania and Hetfield’s tenncy to down-pick, which rulted a thicker, heavier feel. “Holy fuck,” Ian said. “Nothg sound like that before Metalli. From the start, Metalli refed to pulate, stylistilly or otherwise, to anythg happeng around . “They have, more than any other major morn band, nsistently ignored what other groups were tryg to do,” the cric Chuck Klosterman told me. The band members drsed as though they spent most of their days loerg outsi a gas statn. Hetfield would sometim antagonize the dience, growlg, “Hey, any time this stuff gets too heavy for you . . . tough sh!” Offstage, the members of Metalli provoked one another, particularly Ulrich and Hetfield. Their plex, brotherly dynamic—Hetfield was posssive; Ulrich was mandg—sometim threatened to overwhelm the band. “We would get dnk, and jt start ,” Hammett said. “I remember once Jam got up and phed Lars, and Lars lerally flew across the room. We would see each other and start wrtlg. We uld be a room of twenty people and we’d fixate on each other. Thgs” fale aired. When the band first played the ftival, 1996, the bookg angered Perry Farrell, Lollapalooza’s -founr and the ont man of the alt-rock band Jane’s Addictn. “A lot of people were pissed,” Burnste told me. “I unrstand how Perry felt—like his alternative thg was beg -opted.” He add, “Of urse, there was Perry last night backstage, sayg hi to the guys.” The days, Lollapalooza is mostly distguishable om any other major Amerin mic ftival. The weekend’s other headlers clud the pop star Dua Lipa, the rapper J. Cole, and the pop-punk band Green Day. In the wake of “Stranger Thgs,” Metalli was now the most newsworthy act on the bill.

The night before the show, the band met Grant Park to film a short sk wh Joseph Qun, the twenty-ne-year-old Brish actor who plays Munson. “You’re taller than on the TV,” Hetfield joked, shakg Qun’s hand. The band took Qun to s tung trailer to jam. “I’ll give you a four unt,” Ulrich said, dmsticks aloft. Qun left wh a signed guar; the vio was posted to the band’s social-media acunts. Afterward, the band went onstage to rehearse. It had raed earlier the day, and the ground was slick wh mud. I stood on a piece of plywood a mostly empty field and watched Metalli warm up.

Hetfield has evolved to a magic ont man. Early on, he said, his stage persona—cky, aggrsive, hard—was mostly aspiratnal. “Beg up onstage is a fantasy world,” he said. “Everyone is out there sprklg you wh wonrful dt. You start to believe , and then you get home and you go, ‘Where’s my dt?’ ” he said. “Not so wonrful now, stg here alone wh two ts, takg the garbage out.” On tour, he said, the days off are harr than the days on. There’s nowhere to funnel the energy; time turns to a strange, limal expanse. “My body is tired, but my md is still gog. What do I do wh that?” he said. “I jt ask people the crew, or iends, or my assistant, ‘Hey, n you jt s down and watch TV wh me?’ ” “Moth Into Flame,” a song om “Hardwired . . . to Self Dtct,” is about the toxitn of celebry. “I believe the addictn to fame is a real thg,” Hetfield said. “I’ve got my ltle revery posse on the road to help me out. We’ll say a prayer before gog onstage: ‘Jam, you’re a human beg. You’re gog to die. You’re here dog service. You’re dog the bt you n.’ That is helpful for me.”

The followg afternoon, the park filled wh thoands of Metalli shirts, many of which looked nspicuoly new. The atmosphere backstage was relaxed. I sat on a wicker uch wh Robert Tjillo and drank a brand of nned water lled Liquid Death. One of the group’s trailers was labelled “Yoga.” Shortly before Metalli’s set, I climbed a riser on the edge of the stage so that I uld see both the band and the crowd. Ftival sets n be hard—much of the dience had been bobbg the late-July sun for ne hours by the time Metalli took the stage—but the energy was high. “Master of Puppets” has been a fixture on the band’s set list for s, but now ’s been granted extra promence as the fal song of the enre. As Hammett began to play the solo, footage of Eddie Munson appeared on huge screens flankg the stage. The crowd went nuts. I clung to the edge of the riser. For a moment, felt as though all of Chigo were shakg.

After Metalli’s set, Ulrich shed off to the Metro, a rock club near Wrigley Field. His two olst sons—Myl and Layne—play an excellent bass-and-dms duo lled Taipei Hoton, and had a gig openg for the Brish band Idl. “That was the past, this is the future!” Ulrich joked, sprtg toward a wag S.U.V. wearg a navy-blue bathrobe wh the hood up. At the Metro, he stood the V.I.P. balny, glowg wh pri. After the set, as Myl and Layne dutifully broke down their gear, Ulrich chatted wh the club’s owner, Joe Shanahan, about the first time Metalli played the Metro, Augt of 1983, openg for the metal band Raven. Ulrich was neteen.

Later, over tea at his hotel, I asked Ulrich about the “Stranger Thgs” phenomenon. He leaned back, sangue: “If you and I were stg here twenty years ago, thirty years ago, back then was really only about the mic. Partakg the sorts of opportuni would have been nsired sellg out. But the culture is so much more fivg of the typ of thgs now.” He ntued, “When you’ve been around as long as we have, you have to kd of ebb and flow. I don’t thk there were any wrps about Lollapalooza this morng that didn’t mentn Eddie, didn’t mentn ‘Stranger Thgs.’ And ’s not like ‘Eh, what the fuck, is the mic not good enough?’ It’s like . . . ’s ol.”

In 2021, the band released “The Metalli Blacklist,” a llectn of fifty-three vers of songs om the Black Album, honor of the rerd’s thirtieth anniversary. Twelve of the fifty-three artists chose to ver “Nothg Else Matters,” which Hetfield wrote when the band was on tour support of “. . . And Jtice for All.” Elton John once pared “Nothg Else Matters” (favorably) to “Greensleev.” It is, by my acuntg, Metalli’s first song about romantic love. Hetfield n be y about s origs—he missed his girliend; he found that feelg embarrassg—but is also te that, sce s ial release, “Nothg Else Matters” has e to sound ls specifilly romantic and more like an o to any kd of life-stag votn. It’s technilly a waltz, but feels like the last of the great power ballads: momento, tortured, thartic, triumphant. The Metalli muny often talks about the track as a fan anthem of sorts. In moments of ep munn wh the band and s mic, nothg else matters. It’s an emotnal song, but a terrifyg one, too. “What’s heavier than love?” Stt Ian said.

This sort of vulnerabily was once anathema to Metalli—“What I’ve felt, what I’ve known / Never shed through what I’ve shown,” Hetfield sgs on “The Unfiven”—but now feels central to the band’s missn. The sger and songwrer Kris Kristofferson, a longtime supporter, praised Metalli’s humany and good will. “I’m a huge fan of their mic, but even more so of the remarkable human begs they are,” he told me. “All heart.” In nversatn, I found Hetfield warm and disarmgly open. He often quired after my baby dghter. When I mentned that I was havg a hard time sleepg my hotel room, he remd me that was important to have somethg om home. “My dghter gave me the ston—what are they lled? Crystals,” he said. “You’ve gotta brg somethg. A pillowse, some lavenr oil.”

One afternoon, I asked Hetfield if he felt as though he’d fally found the life and muny he’d always wanted: he liv Colorado, huntg, beekeepg, spendg time outdoors; he se iends; he tours wh Metalli. He psed to nsir the qutn. “Will I ever adm that I found ? Will I ever allow myself to be happy enough to say I found ? Maybe that’s a lifelong qut, the search for fay,” he said. “When my fay distegrated, early on life, I found mic, I found the band.
