Sometim queer and trans mic is seen as somethg niche, and this is a way to shift that.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">The ncept of thenticy or “tth” equently up nversatns about untry mic. Why n that be problematic for queer and trans people?</div><p>For queer people, we have to e out and reveal ourselv over and over aga, and some listeners may rpond to that by feelg like what they thought they knew about the artists is a lie. They may ask, “How uld you keep this om me? Or lie to me?” There’s an sentialism to the expectatn that artists are exprsg some sort of ner tth. It don’t take to acunt an unrstandg of self as somethg that is unstable or a movg target.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>In that way, I thought about the opportuni that untry mic offers terms of tth-tellg. I knew that would get me to the thenticy nversatn, which is both so important and so overwrought. The standards of thenticy are so high that hardly any untry mician n actually meet them. Even the straight, cisgenr on: How many of them are g down om the mountas to play a show? Or jumpg off the back of a horse? It’s absurd, what we expect of the artists.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">You e the term “queer scery” to scribe the way that queer artists are able to perform a certa kd of earntns while matag an element of mp irony. Can you give an example of that?</div><p>k.d. lang is a terrific person to talk about this way, bee she was basilly acced of not beg ser enough about her relatnship to untry mic. People didn’t know if was a joke or performance art. She explaed that she was embracg the humor of untry mic as well as s emotnal pth of earntns and love. Amerina se self as a more progrsive alternative to untry, and has certaly been able to market self that way by welg a few performers of lor and more women than mastream untry lets . It also allows artists to be more explic about their polics, bee there isn’t this fear of turng away listeners if you’re too outspoken.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">Straight artists like Kacey Mgrav and Dolly Parton have played an important role makg queer and trans untry listeners feel accepted. Why do you thk the listeners feel such an attachment to Parton particular?</div><p>There’s some really good work on Parton—Leigh H. Edward’s <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Dolly Parton, Genr, and Country Mic</em></a> and Lydia Hamsly’s <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton</em></a> me out recently—and the way that she’s able to very slyly pture the thenticy bat at the re of untry mic.
