As recently as the early 2000s, Merces regularly sold around 13,000 SLs annually. Last year, jt 1300 moved off aler lots. </p><p data-no-id="2" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">So what happened, and why do Merces ntue to bother?</p><p data-no-id="3" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Well, for one thg, tcks and crossovers have voured the market share of every vehicle tegory. "Of urse the SUV segment is the one makg huge progrs year over year," says Michael Knoller, global head of marketg and sal for Merces-AMG, which veloped the latt SL. </p><p data-no-id="4" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Merces's own mol proliferatn has also had a nnibalizg effect. A good part of is simply the marque’s rualistic mment to s herage. "Every there is an SL that reflects the liftyle of the time perd."</p><p data-no-id="9" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">But this cisn is also predited on servicg a particularly valuable nsumer. "The SL ctomers are more loyal ctomers. So, is not only marketg to keep an in alive. But also to meet ctomer expectatns to our portfol," says Knoller. He adds, "And the hoehold e is que high." Edwards's data backs this up. "For the SL specifilly, [the buyers] are olr men who earn more than most mere mortals," he says.</p><p data-no-id="10" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Then there is simply the prtige of havg a viable player this field—particularly one that has been abdited by other petors. "A luxury upe is really cril to a premium brand. It serv as a halo," says Blickenstaff. "The visibily of a upe is far greater than the market volume would suggt part bee the loyalty of upe owners make them really effective brand ambassadors."</p><p data-no-id="11" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Fally, as wh all the bt vehicl, the ownership cisn is not entirely logil but driven by other, often more powerful forc.
