Earlier this year Melbourne saw the closure and sal of three of s inic gay bars, The Xchange Hotel, DT’s Hotel and The Market Hotel. Two of those bars have sce been bought – the former Xchange Hotel is now the DnM gay bar, and DTs too remas servg the gay muny. The venue origally functned as a brothel before beg a gay bar, and slowly transned to an inic lbian bar 20 years ago.
Two years ago, Glasshoe ownership was taken over by lbian uple Libby and Rachel (pictured below) who opened up the bar’s events schle to a broar queer scene cludg events such as Quork Mutant Dis, the SLUT parti and the famo Gay Shame parti. Everyone knows that change n be cremental, but the phrase “gay bar” sounds cliché anymore. The cy’s nizens talk about often: Nightlife tablishments, be they storied or new on the scen, have seen their rpective clientel grow to be clive of not jt gay, lbian, bisexual, and transgenr lols and visors recently.
It’s not overtly “gay! The word “gay” speaks to our abily to do exactly that.
