ABSTRACT A signifint number of YouTube celebry vio bloggers (vloggers) have ed the platform to e out publicly as lbian or gay. This article terrogat the cultural work of YouTube celebry g outs, through the se studi of two of the most proment gay vloggers: Ingrid Nilsen and Connor Franta. The article explor how the g out moments of the vloggers, as articulated their g out vlogs and the wir media disurs surroundg the, make legible a normative gay youth subject posn which is shaped by the specific trop, nventns and mercial ratnale of YouTube fame self. I fe this subject posn as ‘proto-homonormative’. It posns a ‘succsful’ gay adulthood, fed through the neoliberal ials of thenticy, self-brandg and dividual enterprise bound to the phenomenon of YouTube celebry, as ntgent upon a particular personal relatnship wh one’s non-normative sexualy. I terrogate how the emotnal ntours of Nilsen and Franta’s g out narrativ, their reprented abili to channel their non-normative sexuali to lucrative celebry brands and their nstctn as gay and lbian ‘role mols’ by the mastream media leate a journey to ‘acceptance’ and ‘pri’ one’s gay sexualy as the expected narrative of ntemporary gay life. This narrative, I argue, cements the flt normativy of heterosexualy mastream culture, and produc a narrow amework of ‘acceptable’ gay youth subjectivy which is aligned wh the ials of neoliberalism embodied the figure of the YouTube celebry vlogger.
